Boomz12 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 I tried doing some research on an electric Gibson. It has a 7 digit serial and is made in Indonesia. I couldn't find anything about Gibson's being made in Indonesia nor anything about a 7 digit serial. Below are some pictures and any advice would be welcomed.
ninety1vee Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 its obviously a fake its a cort (crapola guitars)
Oringo Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Someone stuck a Gibson logo on this Cort, that's all, and he didn't even bother to replace the Cort neck plate! If you're asking, Boomz, I guess you probably haven't had much experience with Gibsons, so maybe 91V's answer is a little short. In case you're new to this, and this post isn't a prank to sucker in know it all blowhards like me, there are a few things you should know before you ever shell out a dime for a "big name" guitar. Although Gibson made a few guitars with bolt-on necks (Sonex, some L6S'), their main models, Les Pauls, SG's, non-reverse Firebirds, Flying V's, Explorers and most everything else have glued in necks (set neck, it's called). Basically, if you see a Les Paul type of guitar with a Fender-style bolt-in neck, it's not a Gibson. Also, if you're mentioning Indonesia, this Cort must be marked "made in Indonesia." Gibsons have only ever been made in the USA. Hope you didn't buy this as a "bargain price Gibson " because it might not be worth the gas to cart it to the dump.
nolongermike@gibson Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Nope, not a Gibson. Not even close. Gibson has never been made in Indonesia. Like the other poster said, its a Cort quasi-LP knockoff that somebody doctored the headstock with a Gibson logo on, but didn't bother changing the bolt-on neck plate for. Gibson has rarely made a bolt-neck model, and that's not one of them. No Les Paul has ever had a bolt-neck that was made by Gibson. Epiphone, yes. Gibson, no. Hexeir Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 No Les Paul has ever had a bolt-neck that was made by Gibson. Epiphone, yes. Gibson, no. I wish you were right, but Gibson in fact did make a bolt-on Les Paul. It wasn't called a Les Paul, it was called the Invader. But it was definitely in the shape. I know I'm a newbie, and you're admin, but... yeah, it happened. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Gibson_Invader_(1).jpg

Oringo Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Good point, Hexeir! I 'd heard of the Invader, but didn't realize the body was so close to the Les Paul size and shape. Sonex's and bolt-on L6s' are single cut-aways, but the body dimensions are differrent, thinner and wider. It's good to watch out for this since it would be relatively easy to fake an invader from a cheapo LP copy. Then again, real Invaders don't seem to fetch too much, so it's probably not a market being flooded by forgers... Oh yeah, let's not forget the Marauder! Oh, those 80's cost-cutting Gibsons! Then again, my non-reverse Firebird was a cost-cutting move compared to the reverse models, and come to think of it, the SG shape must have saved some dough compared to maple capped Les Pauls...
BIGBENDS Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 The Invader only has a mahogany body, no maple cap like a Les Paul. It's a very distinct difference. It's obvious that it's more a beginner guitar than a LP is. The point that Mike made was that no LES PAUL has ever had a bolt on neck. Other Gibson guitars vaguely resembling the LP body shape have had bolt on necks. The Sonex was also a bolt on neck guitar by the Gibson Guitar Company, but it is very obvious that it's not a LP.

nolongermike@gibson Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 No, I stand by it. Gibson has never made a Les Paul model with a bolt-on neck. That "Invader' is not a "Les Paul."
rmngretsch14 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 We've lost the point, Boomz what you have may be a piece of god knows what, but there is potential for it yet. You can go Pete Townsend on it, you can use it to heat your house for a little while, or you can strip it down to the bare essentials and make your own custom guitar(also as satisfying as bashing it)
