Could I ask a question about my 85 SG Stantard?

Hello,

I have wondered some time about a WONDERFUL guitar I purchased new, and still own in early 1986. It is a Gibson SG Standard. This guitar is SO INCREDIBLE and I wouldn't take anything for it. I have seen multiple pictures of SGs and have noticed this guitar has the power cord outlet on the outside frame of the body, as opposed to the front inlet on the front face of the body like almost every SG I have ever seen. The serial number is 82185533. Research tells me it was made on 08/06/05 in Nashville Tenn. on Tuesday. That being said , my question is.. Why does this axe have the power input on the edge of the guitar, instead of the face of the guitar, was this specific to a certain year of SG? perhaps. This guitar has 23 frets top to bottom, and although I dont use the last 12 LOL, I hope one of you experts can give me some guidance. Thank you in advance for your help, and I'm glad there are places to ask questions like this ! I appreciate your expertise, and ROCK ON FOLKS!

Hey Gregg, welcome to the Gibson forum.

I can,t answer your question definitively , but in general, with Gibson in the 70's and into the 80's,especially with the opening of the Nashville Plant, there seems to have been a lot of 'forward thinking' going on. New ideas from new employees trying to bolster and garnish market share in a competitive and sagging market. The jack placement does seem to be unique to your time frame but I am not certain of the date parameters.

MOST importantly, however, with your '85 SG Standard is that it may be equipped with the 'highly revered' Tim Shaw humbuckers....[scared]

I bought an '80 Les Paul Standard that was void of its original P'ups. I restored it with a great set of Seymore Duncan '59's.

I put it up for sale on Craigs List and by far the largest interest was from buyers wanting to know if it had Tim Shaws in it....Ha!(it most likely had them originally but had been 'robbed')

I dare say....the most sought after and 'affordable' pickups after Seth Lovers' PAF's.....[thumbup]

I guess that could be the reason that you love this guitar so much.....and some reason to celebrate...No?

If this talk, is over your head, sorry! Just do some 'googling'

Thank you mister retrorod for taking the time to give me your input. Let me start by thanking you for your response and welcome. This forum is quite interesting, and with help from fine folks like you it makes confused folks like me feel MUCH more comfortable. You shed GREAT light on my "baby" (my guitar). And much to my pleasure, I discovered the value of the "Tim Shaw" pickups, that I DO have in my axe, YAY!!!!! and had NO IDEA how much the were worth. I spent 12 years "screaming" (not singing) in a metal band and bought that joker brand new to have a guitar when we didn't have a rythem player and I could figure out how to "sing" and play guitar at the same time. Shortly thereafter we found one and all I had to do was jump around the stage like a chicken with his head cut off and get chicks, LOL. Anyway, I did the Google stuff and ebay stuff as you suggested and found out just how valuable those damn pick ups are, (like 300 each). WOW. I have have had some major upgrades to that guitar done, after its purchase I had like a 350 dollar PRO Khaler tremolo system added to it (some very minor routing had to be done to accomodate it). I also added a Seymore Duncan Invader pickup in the Bridge position. The Tim Shaw remains in the neck position, and I have the original one, along with the tuners I replaced with black Grovers at witch time I though were way cool, the original bridge, and the receipt from the day I bought it. 50 years old now, and I take it out and NEVER tune the guy, and if I do it ain't much. You have shed new light on my guitar and if you were here I'd buy you several drinks! Thanks Man!
