phil325 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 i wanted to get the p-90 sound and i was wonderin if i should spring for the SD phat cats...i know there are some people on the forum with it on so how do you like it? i know that in the end it all matters to how i like the sound, etc. etc. but for those who do have it on, is it WORTH it in your opinion? how about if i mix and match? pros and cons? ie. i wanted to put a phat cat in the neck, keep bridge a hb, vice versa. i know about them cancelling each other out if i place phat cats in both. i'm just really contemplating mixing it up so i need insight, hence, asking you guys :D take it easy
retrosurfer1959 Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Have you thought at all about the Seymour Duncan SHPR-1 P-Rails. give you an amazing amount of options. Phat cats sound close but I've never really thought they sounded enough like a p-90, but like you said everyone is different and there close enough not to do a router job!
phil325 Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 Yea i thought about p-rails and i dont want to really eant to get push pull knobs or go that far with modding. I might get p rails for an epi lp.
britabe Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 again, i am told that lindy fralin makes a very nice p-90. highly vintage correct. thats what im going to put in my JL revo casino when i can afford it
phil325 Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 how is the fitment? i know p-90's wont fit the usual lp thats why i was lookin at phat cats cuz they fit into the hb slots
RichCI Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 What kind of sound are you going for or what style of music are you into?
RichCI Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 again' date=' i am told that lindy fralin makes a very nice p-90. highly vintage correct. thats what im going to put in my JL revo casino when i can afford it[/quote'] Just got the new issue of ToneQuest Report and they said, and I quote "You'll recall our recent acquisition of a 2007 non-reverse Custom Shop Firebird - arguably our favorite P90 guitar to date, which is saying a lot, having owned and reviewed multiple goldtops, SGs, ES330s, and Les Paul Juniors equipped with P90s in the past. We also acquired a couple of vintage '50s P90s this year so we feel confident in our ability to assess the variable tones and voices available from new and vintage P90 pickups." [...] "We'll gladly give Lindy Fralin a nod for the best sounding P90s we've played to date - 'vintage' or new." I'd give you more details, but typing this stuff from the printed article sucks. However, if the cork sniffers at TQR give those pups such high praise, you can feel confident that the Fralins are, at the least, very good. www.tonequest.com
phil325 Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 What kind of sound are you going for or what style of music are you into? i'm into all types of blues so i'm really into the tube amp-single coil setup...
RichCI Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Well then, I'd go with the Fralins. I have no experience with them but I do have a lot of faith in that magazine I mentioned above that makes me spend money on gear like lap dances.
phil325 Posted December 5, 2008 Author Posted December 5, 2008 so single coil pickups that fit into the humbucker cavity without mod to the body are: 1. p-94 2. fralin p-92 3. Seymour duncan p-rails anymore? are the twangmasters different than the p-92?
Explorer Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Sounds like you are looking for Fralin P-92's. I had a phat cat in the neck of my les paul for a while, wasn't crazy about the sound. The Phat Cat I think uses Alnico II when normal P-90's use the Alnico V. I know they are not the same magnet composition. Fralin makes really good pickups, so does Jason Lorrar but I don't know if he has a P-90 humbucker version.
