GAS is a drug

Good lord, I've received 2 or 3 guitars in the mail in the last week and I have 3 or 4 more en route. Not big money stuff mind you.

I just bought a newer Ibanez 12 string off a guy in the parking lot for $80 cash. It's like getting a drink of water on a hot day. Or that first drag off a cigarette after sitting through a dull movie in a theater. Or the crossroads kicking in and your scalp starting to tingle. Or the burn of that first slug off a pint of Jack Daniels.

It's a drug.

I have no intention of keeping the Ibanez. I'll restring it, tweak it, and make $20 on ebay maybe. Doesn't matter. I acquired it.

First Christmas season in 20 years with a cupla bucks in the bank.

"GAS is a drug."

Yup, this year I resemble that remark.

Sheesh. You'd think I were again single and 27. <grin> Hmmm. That was a Loooooong time ago.

I've had chronic long-term GAS since I was a teen and it gets more intense and harder to resist than ever, not that I try hard to resist anyway.I'm going to start setting money aside in the New Year to buy a Roger Mayer Octavia to feed my craving that I've had for one of them for decades. Then the next thing on my list will be a Squier Tele Thinline,Custom or Deluxe. Somewhere along the way I hope to get a Rickenbacker from the Capri Series. That's the problem with having deeply rooted chronic GAS,you always have a long list that's constantly being added to.If I ever won a lottery I imagine that I'd have to buy a big warehouse to store all my GAS acquisitions in.I wouldn't exactly classify GAS as a drug, with all its different symptoms it's rightly classified as a Syndrome. The drug would be buying the object of your GAS to remedy the situation and ensuring that the craving is sated.

Yes it's never-ending.....and completely illogical. I should be saving for a good music laptop or PC along with all the VST instruments, amp sims and software but I keep blowing the cash. I recently saw a Gibson ES 775 (up-rated 175), and now I've got to have one....and a Rivera jazz combo with 15" speaker. The logic bit is that in order to get these reasonably quickly I would need to sell some other gear (instead of saving) but....I can't do that!

@Bonzo - I looked at the Octavia, the Prescription Electronics Experience and the Foxrox Octron 2 which is what I bought because of the features and price. I'd have liked them all.

I do have a Mayer Voodoo Vibe+ which was far too expensive really, but a seriously well-made bit of gear. I could have, maybe should have, got a Fulltone or similar - much cheaper! But I wanted THE sound 'from the horse's mouth'....if that makes any sense!

Hi JDGM your decision to buy the Roger Mayer pedal even though it cost a lot more, makes perfect sense to me.I want the authentic sound from the actual original source, not some "reasonable facsimile".I am such a dyed-in-the-wool Hendrix freak only Roger's pedals would do.I have had numerous email conversations with Roger over the years and I consider him a friend albeit one I never met face to face. He's an incredibly gracious and humble man even though his stature in the rock and electronics world is almost iconic,I wouldn't bat an eye about spending uber bucks for his handmade gear because you're not only buying a pedal but something that was a legendary part of rock history made by a man who's a legend in his own right.

BTW: I can fully understand why you would have your sights set on the Gibson 775 as the ES-175 is an incredible guitar-especially the 2 pickup model.

I spend a lot of time trying to bring GAS into control since money is not an obstacle, I contemplate purchases thoroughly.

The best GAS deterrent is to remember how much of a pain in the a$$ is to sell gear I really did not need on eBay or Craigslist.

G.A.S. is a manufactured (marketing) syndrome. Not a "disease." [flapper] Our giving in to "G.A.S." is

the "disease" part. [tongue][biggrin] It's especially easy to give in to, IF/When one has a lot of "disposable

income!" For those of us, who don't...it's a bit easier (though, not always) to resist "G.A.S!"

This forum, allows that process, encourages "G.A.S." even if only by the discussion, and

introduction, of new models of guitars, or the reinforcement, of those guitars (old or new)

already lusted for. What better GAS enduced marketing tool, is there? [biggrin]

As has been discussed, or alluded to, We are the only ones, that have dominion over our own

G.A.S., and/or it's consequences. So...G.A.S. on...or not, whatever You choose. [thumbup]

Oh, and G.A.S. is also FUN...at least, until it gets out of control, and starts actually

having an adverse effect.
