retrosurfer1959 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 I need to send my JBL D120's out to be re-coned and honestly with the value going through the roof lately, Ive decided to replace them in my main 2x12 cabinet. I know they make several supposed sound alike speakers but I have really gone thru some money chasing speakers in the past so figured I'd ask if anyone has experience with speakers to replace the D120's the main ones I'm thinking about are; Weber Cali Eminence Commonwealth Peavey 1203s Black Widow EVM L12 Tone Tubby Ceramic Anybody have any advice or warnings about any of these or something they have heard that's closer to the original.
L5Larry Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Although I'm not familiar with the Commonwealth series, I always had good luck and been very satisfied with Eminence speakers. They came OEM in my Music Man amps, and I've used at least 12 of them in various custom cabs since the mid seventies (2-412 cabs and 4-112 monitors). I also have a REAL GOOD reconing guy, if you want his contact info shoot me a PM.
elantric Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Personally I'd hunt for some EVM 12Ls, or Speaker Repair of Orange County for the D120 recone
Thundergod Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Id go for this one: Eminence Commonwealth Not that I have tried it but I work with Eminence speakers exclusively for my cabs and all of the models I have worked with deliver. Some of them are better than the original (those that are supposed to be replacements for certain celestion models). And, they are cheap (compared to other brands).
Explorer Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 If your thinking about repairing them Orange County is the place to go they do great work. If you are thinking about replacing them, I would go with Weber Cali's, Ted Weber cares a lot about his speakers and make the best Fender replacement speakers of those I have tried. Eminence are another respective company but I have no experience with their common wealth because I use Weber's or get the originals reconed on any amp that has the D120's in it.
retrosurfer1959 Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 Thanks everyone kind of what I thought three different post with three different recomendations of the list. I will get mine re-coned but I think I'm going to hold them back into a studio cab and use the replacemnts to gig the dL120s are justing to rare and valuable for a haul around amp.
