jdd707
Where does Gibson get this quality of Koa????? Good question ..... I was told by an old dulcimer player (who had some very nice koa dulcimers) that two types exists. Virgin koa from Hawaii .. old growth... and plantation koa from California. With the recent upsurge in ukes and koa guitars, koa must be difficult to obtain. Anyone else heard of these koa plantations?

J-1854Me
Where does Gibson get this quality of Koa????? Somewhere in Hawaii, I'm guessing.... Here is a guitar I used to own, a '95 J-200 koa: And this is the back of my '04 J-200 Elite, also in koa: Lovely stuff! Fred
jdd707
Some may find this interesting.... http://www.hawaiifor...est_plantations Thanks retro ..... so according to this no plantation koa is being used commerically and 45 - 50 year old trees would be necessary to produce quality wood. So young men, plant now so your grandchildren can make quality ukes!
