Question about Hummingbird True Vintage

hey guys, so a buddy of mine is considering a hummingbird true vintage but was a bit worried about the same thing I always fretted about.....the design coming off. I know these are different guards compared to the regular (standard)model of today, but they are the same mold as the vintage or real hummingbird guards. My question is....I remember reading awhile back that someone mentioned about putting some sort of clear lacquer over the design and it would not come off. Is this true? Does anybody remember this specific topic? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm the guy that likely wrote about putting a clear lacquer over the pickguard, because I did that with my J150. I got the guitar 8-years ago or so, new. The pickguard design was painted-on and started coming-off within a couple weeks, right in the corner where my little finger rests when I fingerpick.. Anyway, the lacquer works. My Hummingbird has the design literally engraved into the pickguard. Stands-up to most anything.

Is it a certain kind of lacquer?

Another option, one I use. "Guitar Bra" Luxlogs.com makes a thick, flexible clear plastic sheeting you can cutout a template to fit over your pickguard. It is one of those things that sort of adheres automatically. I have used it for a few years on two painted on pickguards with no adverse affect. Only when I'm doing heavy playing - not often, keep it off the rest of the time. G'luck.
