BluesKing777
I was awoken from my siesta/granny nap yesterday by the rotten screamers next door getting immolated by fuel one at a time - either that or they were having a swim in their pool, so I had to get out of my house and headed to a Music Shop chainstore that I saw advertising that they were the new Gibson Dealer? The previous chain that sold Gibsons went broke recently. So I went in to find no Gibson acoustics, YEP - just a handful of Goldtop electric reissues next to....eeeeeeekkkkk.... a reissue of a 72 Fender Telecaster Custom that I actually bought the real one of, fairly close to brand new...I am vintage old too! So I was feeling old and grumpy and 15 year old "Squeek" I shall call him, asked me if I wanted any help. Now I am feelin' really, really old and grumpy... I wandered off to the guitar string area and YEP, no Gibson Masterbuilt strings of any description. Have read on the forum that D'Addarrios make them now, so picked up a couple of boxes of 12s. Will see how they go. Went out to the sheet music area to look what is about, and the first thing I see is the Beatles Complete Scores, which I waited forever for home delivery, and I see I could have got it immediately at this shop. I have a lot of music books and couldn't really see anything inspiring so I wandered over to the acoustic guitar section where some young guy was going Klang Klang on a Taylor, which I am still yet to try, and he was ok and his girl thought he was just a dream by the look on her face, so not to interrupt this thing they had going, I headed to the counter to pay and F... off. I nearly tripped over the special Gibson sales display with Gibson shot glasses, t-shirts, pick container and guess what? A Gibson Hat! YEP Now mine....what a dork. BluesKIng777. BluesKing777
Well, I think I should now get a Gibson hat to go with my Gibson denim jacket..... Yeah!!!! Go get it today! (And if you get a Gibson T-shirt check the sizes - when they say large I think they mean a large Asian or a large child, not a big boofhead Austrakian/American/Englander. I am a fat Medium but that would be a nice guitar polisher rag....need wayyyyy bigger. That could be the ones they had here - the ones in the States may be from a different supply) BluesKing777. Probably no more than the Gibson T-Shirt in combination with the Gibson Hat? BluesKIng777.

stein
Thread inspired me. Bored stiff, and doing nothing, decided to visit MY local "big box" retail outlet. Here, we call them GUITAR CENTER. This is wierd: they opened a brand new one real close. I thought they were in trouble? Besides, it's next to LOWES. Nice. I figure, it's a brand new store, so little chance of used stuff, but maybe they got some of the hot new stuff I been reading about here? Nope. It's really amazing how a store can have HUNDREDS of new axes, yet not have anything. Basically, it's a whole store of nothing. THAT, my freinds, is a freak of science! One thing though, I had been kinda gassing for a Midtown Custom sinse I saw them here. Not like I have money, but just wanted to check them out. They had ONE "Standard" (not interested...but maybe would have tried it if it wasn't high on the wall). Looks a LOT smaller in person. But to be fair, I've gained a few pounds sinse I strapped on a 335. It's all relative. Well...after taking a LONG, HARD look at EVERYTHING trying to find maybe SOMETHING of interest, finally, I stumble into the ACCOUSTIC ROOM. I never expect much in the AR at GC, but if I was ever hard up to look deep for something of interest, it was then. Was I followed? I pause to glance at the size of the large hall full of Chinese art, check my surroundings. I'm ALONE! Not one to be thrarted by pretty laminates and poly, the decoys suddenly become a welcoming commitee, as I make my way the distance down into the room that holds perhaps copies of the Holy Grail. There is one soul. He's playing what I recognise as music. It's a small bodied Gibson, and he sounds GOOD. Conversation starts. Before I can grab something off the wall myself, he hands me the guitar. It WORKS. I mean, it sounds good everywhere on it. It's a L-00. I hand it back, sight a 00 sized 12 fret Martin, and it sounds REAL good. Pretty quick, we are playing guitars to each other. I'm grabbing off the wall what I think is interesting, pluck a few notes and chords, and hand it over. I listen intently, he hands it back for a listen. I'm hard to ablidge because of my excessive nails, but he keeps asking for the GROWL I'm twisting out of these things. We both come to the conclusion: The Martin 00 12 fretter is one SWEET guitar, but after about 2 or 3 chords, the Gibby L-00 had more depth, more color, more oppurtunities for music, and always seemed to be working better. And of corse, it had a certain growl this guy was REALLY into. The martin was impressive, but from the front, had far more treble and bright that seemed to be more of a thing to try and control. The Gibby was a MUSIC MACHINE! Notes SANG as though a vocalist was pronouncing words. I'd take either one.

Absolutely love mine, and play it 90% of the time, despite having several nice Gibsons and Martins.

BluesKing777
Nope...Thought about the coffee cup though. I should have got one of those coffee cups! I looked at my coffee mug and it is a work one.....eeek...I am on a few days holiday and didn't want to read that name..... BluesKing777. j45nick
(Love the L-00 Legend, Nick - is that a touch of corduroy on the finish before the pickguard?) You can see that in the right light, but not really feel it. It's just the way wide-grain Adi usually is with a thin nitro finish, and particularly shows up in the dark part of a 'burst. This one was natural, and even maybe had this "base model" look and feel, however, the construction was top notch. The guy there picked up on the fact it had electronics, and I saw it had a REALLY tasteful oiled bronze plug-in/strap thingy, and it had a knob in the soundhole. Price: 2 cake. Not bad, eh? Not surprised you play your's that much of the time, because that's basically what we did. And had that guitar been mine, I would likely play it mostly. Not because of it's handy size either- but truly, this this responded to every thing and 'type' of music I would likely need or want to play. Fingerpicked rags, blending Jazz chords, blues thrashing. Even single note leads. A guy could go from a smooth Jazz to a mean, bright sear with little effort or manipulation. Small antecdote: out of the 4 or so D-28's there, we found one that was pretty nice sounding. I had him play me that one, and standing back, this thing was LOUD. I thought I could feel the airwaves coming out of it, similar to the sensation of playing in front of a Marshall stack. I totally see why Bluegrassers go for these things. Back to our small bodied program, the little 00 sized Martin was impressive in a very different way. I was surprised to find it was made of rosewood instead of hog, as the highs had a very, extremely, sweet intoxicating feel. More surprising was the price of 1500 bones. I had to check the inside to see the "made in usa" stamp on the brace. Notes exploded from the slightest pluck. It was interesting: the Gibby tended to make a guy want to create music, while the Martin mesmorized. Made you want to pluck, like a drug. And LIKE a drug, made a guy lazy and not want to carry a tune. Had finanaces been a different situation for me, This likely would be a NGD post. Both were affordable in my eyes. While 1500 and 2000 seem like different prices, the guitars were on equal ground, and very different. the 500 dollar difference wouldn't even come into play, because this wouldn't have been a case of buying a guitar, it's buying music. We did pluck a few others. None of the cheaper ones did any of these things, nor did the Taylors

stein
Not surprised by this, I trust? You would think, as MANY times as I have experienced this kind of thing, I wouldn't be. But still, when I experience good guitars on this level, it does. How is it, that a bunch of glued together parts go from something that has strings on it you can play, to becoming a living, breathing, INSTRUMENT of music? If I believed in magic elves or something....
