von dutch Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I was checking out a 93 Explorer- I 'm not sure if it has had parts added- BUT It was Ebony with black hrdwr - pickguard etc but it had chrome tuners. What is the designation for an all black Explorer? Gothic? And does anyone think it's odd that it has all black appointments and then chrome tuners? I just wanted to check with the people in the know. Thanks
brundaddy Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I'd think somebody started to customize it but didn't finish the job. I think normal Explorers have dot inlays on the fretboard but the Gothic models have only a 12th-fret marker which is a moon or cross or something. Hope this helps.

I'm not really into the Goth guitars. I think once someone starts changing parts and adding parts the value just goes down on the Explorers-- at least it's like that from what I've seen. I was thinking of trading the guy an 83 Precision all original for it but I'm not doing that. Thanks
Hydra26 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Also, if I remember correctly, the goth series guitrs were done in a satin finish and had a little picture of orville gibson on the back of the headstock. They're not really my taste either. Actually I tend to avoid black or red guitars in general, just personal preference. Something's not original on that guitar, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with it. You can always change out the machine heads or other hardware to something else but I guess it also raises a question on whether the pickups and electronics are original or aftermarket. I always look at them as just being used guitars, and will pay accordingly based on condition/how much I want it, etc. Remember, the price of a new explorer where you're the first owner includes a manufacturer's warranty that a used guitar is not going to have. Seldom need the warranty on somehing like this, but it's there anyway in the full new price.
von dutch Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Yeah- my 83 P bass to me is worth more than the guys Explorer. I'd have to find a pickguard, bridge, tailpiece, screws and other stuff and prob spend an hour+ cleaning it. I've run into that a lot. I'd love to have an Explorer guitar- I have 2 Expl. basses- ones and Epi and the other a Hamer.
