rosiedog Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hello all - Just picked up a 69 SG standard and, in going over the parts, noticed the vibrola seemed very clean compared to the rest of the guitar (tho I've seen that before). Wondering if there's a difinitive way to determine if this vibrola unit is original to the guitar and is, in fact, vintage, or a repro.... thanks.
lous1952 Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 A '69 SG should have chrome hardware, including the Vibrola. The chrome can still be very shiny even after 40 years. My '69 Standard is in the picture below, and as you can see the Vibrola is quite shiny. Post a picture of yours and Let's see it.
rosiedog Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 http://picasaweb.google.com/mark.primoff/DeluxeBack# Didn't know how to post pix, but if you click on the link above you can see front and back. Came with a more worn gold handle that was clearly not original to this rig......my assumption is that the last owner lost the original arm and replaced it with whatever he could find.....just want to make sure he didn't replace the virbola as well........
lous1952 Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 It looks right to me. You can buy original arms on ebay or reproduction arms on ebay or from Allparts. Why isn't it on the SG? Did you convert it to hardtail?
rosiedog Posted December 7, 2008 Author Posted December 7, 2008 guitar has some issues i'm working on -- needs some repairs around the bridge posts -- it was when I was removing the vibrola that I stopped to think about how new it looked......
