P90's for sg classic pickguard

Can't find the one that's fit? the regular soap-bar ain't the one and not the dog-ear, any opinions?

Bought a old 69 sg special where both hardwear and electronic needed to be replaced. Ain't stressing with it have bought the parts know and then. So it's only the pickups i'm missing + a minor adjustment on the new sg classic pickguard i bought. Looks a bit strange with the new hardwear on that old body but time will fix that. And i don't care about that keep it original thing, i'm making my own Sg special [biggrin]

A little pick of it without the pickups. Gonna have nickel covers on those pickups btw

That new truss-rod cover i put on is kinda light in the pick, looks better in real life. Am looking for that little Angus devil decal found on Gibsons old Angus Sg Sig

The newer SG Classic that I have, has a plate that a standard P90 attaches to, they use the 2 adjustment screws in between the pole pieces to attach to the plate with the screws and a nut, then use the pu adjustment screws on the side of the pu the go thru the pickguard with springs and into this plate, sort of like a normal humbucker. I got ride of this and screwed the P90 adjustment screws into the body. I drilled and tapped the wood. Works fine just have to find the right screws and be carefull not to drill to deep.

Thanks man [thumbup]

Sound like the way to do it. A guitar tech gonna put some new frets on her and i think i leave this pickup stuff to him. Have to save up a couple of months but it's gonna be worth it, cause i know this guitar gonna be great. The unplugged sound is great, for an sg she got pretty nice sustain to. And the neck is perfect for my hands. A little bit wider than the Angus sig, and the curve feels more natural than the flat, wide Sg 61 slim taper neck.

The infamous "batwing P90" mounting...

When I wanted to install a P90 in my Melody Maker ('64) I came across a similar problem. The original pickups mounted to the pickguard, and the body's too thin to risk putting a screw through.

I worked with Wolfe Macleod from Wolfetone pickups to develop a solution; a modified Dogear baseplate. Basically, we took the Dogear baseplate, turned it upside-down (so the tabs "float" rather than sit at the bottom of the cavity) filed the tabs a bit to shorten them, and then cut the "feet" off of a Humbucker baseplate and soldered them to the tabs of the Dogear baseplate. The Humbucker feet provide the threads for the screws to go through. Add springs/surgical tubing and you've got a DIY Batwing P90 mount.

I just remembered. I had a Gibson LP 50th trib with P90's which I changed to mini's and when I opened her up she had a metal plate in the bottom of the pickup rout. It was screwed into the body with 2 little screws and had the 2 P90 middle mounting holes tapped into the plate, also had the mounting holes on the side for the mini's. I called Gibson asking for some of these plates but they wouldn't sell them to me, maybe things have changed or you could make your own. I always said I was going to make my own but keep forgetting about them. One other thing you need some extra long mounting screws for the bridge P90 which are hard to find, that is the one thing that is good about the pick guard mounted way the mounting screws are normal.

.

Gibson makes P-94 pups for this purpose - swapping with a humbucker. Also there are other pup manufacturers that make pups for this situation - http://www.bg-pups.com/h90.html and http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/specialized/specialized-instruments/sph901_phat_cat/ among others.

Direct swap, no modding. . . The Seymour Duncan PhatCat comes in nickel covers.
