Jimmikatt
what years had the thinnest necks for the LP.?
pippy
They vary from guitar to guitar but in my experience the early '1960 Classic' models - say 1989 to '92 - are the thinnest-necked LPs I've ever handled. I have a '91 and a '95. The '95 measures exactly the same as my (Slim-Profile) '60 Re-Issue but the former is much slimmer. P.
kidblast
yea what Pippy says. this seems to be one of the areas where Gibsons are the least consistent. the only guidance here is if you want the thinner necks, definitely look to the 60s neck profile verses the 50s round neck and work your way in from there. I have a 95 Standard with a 59 round neck, yet my buddy has a real 59 gold top (it's beat to snot) but that neck is freaking huge! Nothing like my 95. It's monstrous my 02 Standard has a (I think it's a) 60's slim taper, it's significantly thinner, I like both necks, but some days I like the slim taper better. Jimmikatt
Thanks for the replies, as i'm looking at getting a Gold Top reissue, just didn't know what year, my favorite is the 56 with the P90's, but wanted a neck that was playable for me. I don't buy guitars to hang on the wall, they all must be played, a lot...lol maybe a custom shop job comes to mind to get exactly what i'm looking for. but before i die, i must have a GT. Thanks again.
pippy
Further to what kidblast has said I would add that I've played vintage '57 and '58 Gibsons - which are supposed to have 'Baseball Bat' necks - that, regardless of their thickness, actually feel slimmer than later '59 or '60 profile necks due to them having less 'shoulder'. Another thing to bear in mind is that 'Thin' isn't always 'Good'. My '91 '1960 Classic' is a PITA to keep in tune as the neck is so slim every turn of any tuner puts the rest of the strings out of pitch. The neck is quicksilver-fast and as resonant as a drum but not very 'gig-friendly'. For a real-live, regularly used, gigging instrument a more stable, thicker, neck would be preferable. IMHO. P. Jimmikatt
I guess it has to do with how aggressive you play, string gauge, can throw in some climate also...lol oops, for about tuning machines, even though being gibson / grover, i have found some stay in tune better than others. i have a 88 tobacco burst that gave me troubles, until replacing the tuners, it also has one of the thinnest necks i have ever played . but around the house, my 85 MIJ Strat gets the most attention, just due to the versatility of tones i can get with it. also had a turner upgrade, didn't care for the vintage. pippy
...i'm looking at getting a Gold Top reissue..........but wanted a neck that was playable for me.........before i die, i must have a GT.... There was a Gold-Top version of the 1960 Classic available. It isn't quite in the same league as a re-issue but it will have a slim neck and be Gold. Fit a pair of covers on the p-ups and it will look exactly like a '57 G-T....... My tuning issues aren't tuner-related; just the thinness of the neck means it bends ever so slightly with more or less tension... P.
