Hey Everyone,

Thanks

Its that NEW stringless J100+......The plus is, it does not take any strings....Saves a lot of money in the long run.....[lol]

I'm sorry....Pretty guitar! Specifically....what do you want to know?

This is an unusual guitar, in my impression: it shares several features with the J-200, namely, the 'crown' fingerboard inlays, the bound board, and the inlaid back strip. And the MOP logo.

Normally, the J-100 of that era received no back strip, only dot inlays on the board and a non-bound board at that. And a silkscreen logo.

The wood is right for a J-100 from 1991 (all the way to the late 1990s) -- mahogany. And the neck also appears to be mahogany, which is to spec for that era.

The J-100s in 1989 and 1990 were maple b&s, and a maple neck, and they had the smaller teardrop pickguard, and the small reverse-belly bridge. When they switched to mahogany in 1991-2, they also went to the larger 'moustache' bridge, but without inlay, and they moved to the larger batwing pickguard. That's why the fingerboard inlay, the bound board, and the back inlays and the inlaid logo don't line up with a J-100.

I think that the "+" likely refers to a version that was built using these J-200 features on a J-100, perhaps, "trying the waters", so to speak.

Maybe after that, they decided to rename the former J-100 as J-100Xtra, but with less of the J-200 bling that yours has?

Cool guitar, in either case!

Can you provide a close up of the label (which is white and correct for 1989 - 93, offset from the centre strip to the treble side)?

I would think it would be a dissapointment to recieve it......only to find that you had to string it first[unsure] before playing it.

I have shipped and recieved several guitars over the years and the always had strings on......tuned downed slightly. I always thought it was good practice to put a strip of cardboard between the strings and neck to prevent any rattling or fret dings in case of impact and generally pad the crap out of it so it won't budge.

It has been a long time since I got a guitar in the mail.......very exciting times.......Damn, I miss it[crying]

Hi JFGebhardt, I have had a look in my copy of "Gibson`s fabulous flat-top guitars" and there is no mention of your guitar. However on page 149, there is a photo of a 1991 prototype SJ-100 reissue with stair step headstock, which has exactly the same body as yours, although it carries the original 38 type pickguard. I think your guitar is also a prototype, but in your case with the SJ-100 body married to a J-200 neck, and given a plain J-200 type pickguard.

It`s a lovely oddity, enjoy.
