People do stupid things. Here's a sure-fire cure for constipation.

Is it just me or does this bear have a look of... "I wanta play" about him? Like the way a dog will bounce around in the water expecting a stick to be thrown for him to go fetch.

I do believe if I'd been in that group I would have insisted that we start moving away as soon as the bear was with in 75 feet or so. They can run very fast, it would have been slowed a bit because of the water but on land they can reach speed's of 30-40 MPH in a short distance. A fast human sprinter can break 20-25 MPH with-in a 100 meter's but will then get tired and have to stop. My fat butt is not quite so fast! [biggrin]

I am not of the belief that humans seeking these close encounters are doing anything but making the animals less wary of people and thereby far more dangerous. Timothy Treadwell did his cartoonish nonsense and ended up exactly where then Native Alaskans thought he would. It's one thing to study them and quite another to tempt fate.

This guy swimming with the polar bear is a professional animal handler, and if that bear decides it's time to eat he's just as dead as some fool out in the wilderness sitting by a stream where's bears look for food. The pros are paid the big bucks to do this stuff and even they are at risk. When we were at Yellowstone about 4 years ago, a park ranger told us that the same people who won't get out of their cars because of a stray doberman will try to take close-up pics of a mother bear and her cubs. We are who we are....lol
