This was posted in the Acoustic subforum a bit earlier. Here's a link to the article - http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/vintage-gibson-guitar-delta-baggage-leevees-214634001.html

@Rocky: Regarding the video link - you've got the embedded link. I posted the direct link below.

Damn, that case looks horribly smashed, but the guitar must've squeezed out (before it got mangled like the case) as the damage repair was reported to be $1,980.

Coincidentally, on a 1974 flight to Heathrow, I found my guitar case had been damaged by Delta. By some miracle the guitar was okay. These days, judging from the condition of my luggage, baggage handling has gotten worse than ever. Checking an instrument is risky.

I've spent a fair chunk of my adult life working in the travel industry (in a marketing capacity). No one in the know flies with Delta, they're appalling. Also, never allow an airline to put your valuables/ breakables of any kind in the hold of an aircraft. Your travel insurance generally doesn't cover items while in the care of an airline and the Warsaw convention limits their liability for lost luggage to around $1300, often less than the price paid to travel.
