Motherofpearl Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I use lights on my jumbos not martin strings though.
sixstringjustice Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Martin makes great guitars and great strings. As always; a little experimentation with different brands and gauges will let you know what sounds best to your ears. And no one is going to cry foul if you want to use up some Martin's on your Gibby. It might explode though...we don't know...
ParlourMan Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 There's probably some in here using Martin strings on a Gibson, it appears not to be the most common or popular choice but I'm sure I've seen it spoken about in here. I'd recommend trying a few of the more popular choices too though. It's a cheap experiment and you may find a certain type is more suited to your sound preferences. Welcome aboard.
Motherofpearl Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 no harm to try and brand of strings on any guitar really. FWIW, Gibson ships their guitars from the factory with Gibson Masterbuilt strings...which from what I understand nowadays are D'Addario EXP strings rebranded. So if you wanna see what the true "Gibson" sound may be on that new J-200 as Gibson intended...you may give those a try at some point. Welcome. Try the gibson masterbuilts only if you love changing strings! IMO they last a day

Tman Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I use Martins on my J-200. No cons for me. I love em.
E-minor7 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 No problem at all - no logics like that whatsoever. But hey, , , congs. on the new 200, , , , , , and your wife. Look forward to hear more from you. E-minor7 (a long time D-35 person)
meanstreak Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I've been using Cleartones lately. They're a bit pricey but last long and sound great to me. I've used Martins on my el cheapo guitars for years too.
QuestionMark Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I use Martin SP Acoustic Bronze 12s on all of my guitars/Gibsons. Have for years. QM aka Jazzman Jeff
Rambler Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 i have a martin D-35 and im using martin light 12-54 guage my wife bought me a 1992 J-200 [you lucky fella] with a 12-53 guage on it? [should I] use the martin strings on my J-200 . To get the best sound out of that J200, you are going to want to use a medium [13] set. You have 17" worth of top to get moving, so you need what help you can get , including tighter string tension. Simple physics. For that matter, you might want to be using mediums to get the best out of your Mart. Just sayin'
J-1854Me Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Nice looking 'mint' you have there!! ..... On my J-200, I tend to use John Pearse Phosphor Bronze Bluegrass gauge strings: JP 650 They have a standard gauge top end and slightly larger bottom end strings. Fred
ironside Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Your wife must love you. hi there! i guess she must as she has put up with me for over 56 years. i still think she is the best! thanks

Fred hi again! i really like the thought of the heavier bottom end but should i have any concerns about the extra tension on the neck? what do others think as well????? thanks for the info jim
Rambler Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 should i have any concerns about the extra tension on the neck? . Not a worry. That's how they are meant to play.
