kindatadpole Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I purchased a 2013 SG Standard from Guitar Center, had it shipped to my house, and noticed a small black dot near the fifth fret indicator on the top of the binding. I'm annoyed because this is the first "nice" and new guitar I have ever purchased. Its a small black "speck" underneath the clear coat, i cannot clean it off or scratch it off, can I? Would you guys exchange the guitar for another one? It's kind of annoying because its in a fairly obvious spot. Thanks
SGgypsyboy Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 If it plays great and has the feel that speaks to you and all else seems right, I'd call GC and see if they would refund a few bucks for the finish flaw. It is pretty damn small so at least it's not really conspicuous. I've seen worse, but you paid for a Gibson so call em and see what they say. Don't try and scrape it off if it's under the finish.
sgplayers Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I don't think I would worry about it. Getting it fixed would be more of a hassle than I would want. I had two new Gibson's with paint defects and also had the Musicians friend extended warranty. M F told me to call Gibson and they told me to take it to an authorized dealer. It was then that I realized I was the only one that noticed it and if they were stolen I could identify them . My les Paul has something similar to vise marks on the body like someone laid it down on its back and set it in a vise. I polished it out myself. My Sg with burst bucker 1 and 3 had the same similar mark but only on one side. I polished it out also. I realize you cant do much about yours and its really up to you. But,If it got stolen you could identify it . If there was anything else besides that I would send it back. That's me though. Hope I helped you some. Btw don't waist your money on extended warranties from Musicians friend.
EpiNova95 Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 That's pretty minor IMO but remember if you were to sell the guitar, it would need to be disclosed... And if someone else is going to get a better deal because of it, why shouldn't you? I'd definitely ask for a partial refund. On the other hand, it can get much worse with quality control, and buying online you never know what defects the replacement may have.
kindatadpole Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 Called Guitar Center. Guitar is on back order until 2/28! So i'd have to return it now, wait a month and roll the dice again. BUT They gave me a very enticing offer, 10% off! So its $130 back to my face if i decide to keep it. Since i bought the guitar for 15% off during a sale, with this additional 10% its quite a steal. What are your guy's thoughts? I've been reading a lot of horror stories from gibsons lately. Thank you.
sgplayers Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 sounds to me like you got a good deal on your new guitar .lol
kindatadpole Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 Yeah this really takes the sting out of it! I'm stoked. BTW do you guy's name your guitars? I'm thinking of naming this one Dot.
Bender 4 Life Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 keep it....it's a great indicator IF it's ever stolen ! "officer, does the SG you're looking at have a black/brown speck near the 5th fret side marker? it DOES? it's MINE !!" sereal #s can be altered, but no-one would think about that tiny little tattle-tale mark.
DiamondJig Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 It should just rub out, they paint over the binding and after it dries they scrap away the paint with knifes.
John Rutherford Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 This is a gag right ? It's so insignificant a flaw as to be laughable. The OP needs to get some perspective.

GuitarBilly Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Leave it alone. If you look hard enough, you'll find a flaw in every guitar.
SouthpawKen Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Yeah this really takes the sting out of it! I'm stoked. BTW do you guy's name your guitars? I'm thinking of naming this one Dot. How about you call it SPOT!
schnicke Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 If you ever get a job responsible for quality checks , not a single guitar will ever leave the guitar factory...
