In Melbourne Australia, there is a second hand instrument shop called the "Music Swop Shop" - they sell everything at a 20% consignment fee.

I watch the 'acoustic guitars' section well, every day!

EM7 if you are reading this, have a look under alphabetical G:

Are there a similar types of shops in the states that are exclusively 'consignment goods' sellers?

I have bought one guitar there! Another time the kiddy salesman I lucked into frightened me off, but there are a few salepeople.

Interesting concept, with low risk for the store operator other than fire and theft. Haven't seen the same thing in the US. Most of the consignment gear I have seen here was over-priced, but my L-OO Legend was a consignment instrument at a boutique guitar shop.

A lot of dealers here carry some consignment equipment.

I have also never seen a store like that. Generally though, my heart sinks when I am looking at a guitar only to find out it is in the store on cosignment. At least in the smaller stores, the owner often just does not have all that much wiggle room in asking price so it is hard to score a good deal.

That's true, but in the Swoppy's case, they try and get owners to set a reasonable price based on current market values (australian), and if you make an offer they will call the owner and negotiate. It's a good system.

Yes, it does seem to have a good system, except for the 20%.....a bit high, but better than a pawn shop which may not give you 20% of the price for the whole guitar.

I would hang around the Swop Shop a lot more, but I am quite a few hours drive away! I can get on a freeway for a lot of the trip, but it ends in a pile of doggy stuff at Hoddle St with a whole mean set of traffic lights to test the patience....

Hey there BluesKing 777 - if you know anywhere that does less than 20% i'd like to know. Not having a dig, but last time I tried to put gear on consignment most places around Melbourne were charging 25%.

Why I posted the thread originally - is because I don't know anywhere else here that sells on consignment......let me in on the secrets, Clayfingers (CF from herein...)! I do have a couple of guitars in my hallway in-the-way....they are going somewhere.....

While 20% is reasonable for a $300 - 700 guitar, it is a bit of a sting on a $3000 - upwards guitar. Do they make adjustments for expensive guitars or is it 20% flat?

I suppose I have been a rube and a dupe for many years and probably a 'buyer' (mark?). I only really started buying guitars lately, well since I gave up smoking and replaced one habit with another - it may have been worse if I had decided to do up old convertibles and v8s.....

Thanks for the reply.
