JAddison Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Morning all, I am wondering what strings came on my new LG2. They are lovely.. both in feel and sound. They are quite silver in colour (as opposed to bronze) The high E snapped so I replaced it with one from a Addario lights/12's Ej16's Phosphor Bronze 12's pack. The ball on the end of the original string was silver where as the Addario string has a gold ball so it's safe to say they aren't Addario's. I need to find out whether they are 80/20, PB's etc and also what guage. They sound so balanced, just perfect really. The LG2 isn't advertised on Gibson's site. I checked out the Blues King on there too and it doesn't mention what strings ship with it. Any ideas? I have the following new strings; Sunbeam round core 12's Gibson Masterbuilt PB 12's Martin FX 90/20 12's Martin SP PB 80/20 12's Martin PB 11's Addario EJ16 (PB 12's)
ParlourMan Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Should be either Gibson Masterbuilt 11-52 or Gibson Masterbuilt 12-54 unless they've changed the stock strings in the last while. These strings get a hard time as many don't like them, I'm quite a fan of them actually. It's often been said too that those strings are just D'addario EXP strings rebranded, I'm not sure how accurate that is though. Hopefully some others will chip in. What many say is the lifespan of the Gibson strings is too short for tyhem, but i tend to affect people more who have acidic sweat, it would seem I don't as I can get quite a while out of them looking and sounding newish. In fact my J-45 came with the stock strings, some were black and looked worn & horrible. I changed them the same day, about 3 months of constant use later including gigs I still hadn't killed them. Generally it's recommended to try a few types over a period of time to find the ones you like best for that particular guitar. A cool experiment and cheap enough to do also. All the best.

geeterpicker Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I was wondering the same thing when I got mine. The Gibson website just says 11-52s, but the strings that were on my guitar felt like they might've been replaced with Elixer nanos by Guitar Center. They felt pretty slick and I am used to that coated feeling, though generally my coates string of choice are EXPs. I played the guitar so much this week that I killed those strings, so I just replaced them with Martin SP lights, which are 12-54. I am assuming that standard lights should be fine on the L-00. When I compared the sizes of the old strings to the ones I put on, they looked to be the same size.
rar Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Should be either Gibson Masterbuilt 11-52 or Gibson Masterbuilt 12-54 unless they've changed the stock strings in the last while. ... We ought to have one of these discussions pinned. (Do a search, you'll see there have been a bunch of them.) The short version of the story is that Gibson Acoustic stopped using Gibson Masterbuilt strings a couple of years ago. The current original-equipment strings are 80/20-s, wound by D'Addario to Gibson Acoustic's specs. (D'Addarion also winds the Masterbuilts, but the Accessories division controls the Masterbuilt specs and the Acoustic division controls the specs of the strings they actually use.) These are not available commercially, though the GM in Bozeman told me last summer that he's working on changing that. Which is the last I've heard on the subject. The general consensus seems to be that D'Addario's regular or coated 80/20-s are as close as anything you can buy, but people's ears vary. -- Bob R
