Nice job on a Guy Clark tune. Clark is a very skilled writer and has that "human touch" with his words. Great story (and from what I've read and heard him say, a true tale from his chidhood). You do it well. I've heard it done with a lone guitar and also The Highwaymen (Kristofferson, Cash, Jennings, Nelson) with their band. As much as I liked The Highwaymen, they were far-too loud for such an intimate song. I saw Clark do it "live" in Kansas City a couple years ago, just his guitar (with Lyle Lovett humming-along off to the side), and I heard a track of Cash doing it alone (the idiots left if off of his first American Recordings album). Both versions were literally stunning in their simplicity. Your rendition rates pretty high for me. I enjoyed it. Very real. [thumbup]

Thanks Larry.I can imagine JC's Rick Rubined version..would have been good.I actually did this as a fully strummed version with a pick- a more aggressive interpretation.I tried to upload it twice to youtube and it didn't work.So I thought I'd redo it.When I listened I realised it would be better as a more subdued fingerpicked song...so i redid like that.

Hey flatbaroque, first of all, great song choice, brings back a flood of memories! IMHO, some of the best of Americana music. I may have first heard it with The Highwaymen version....maybe earlier. I do' really' appreciate anyones solo interpretation of a 'good song'!!

Just as much as a 'singular interpretation' of a good song, I,as well, enjoy a band-unified version.....

This is a nugget that I found.

Stick it out to 4 minutes+and you will be rewarded greatly....

yea nice Rod...JJW is always good, he's got a couple of versions of this around...some Gibson content- southern jumbo? or something....and who doesn't like the odd "all along the watchtower" solo as an added bonus!
