JamGuy
so I was "half" kidding yesterday when I bid $770 on a 2003 SG 61 Reissue to get the bidding started... I wasn't surprised to find that I had been outbid when I got home from the pub. However, I was surprised today to find that the seller sent me a second chance offer for $770 (plus the $46 shipping). The guitar has a few dings but it seems like a heck of a deal... which also included the hardshell case. The seller has all positive feedback and the guitar is not supposed to have any major issues other than a few cosmetic things. What do you think? I just got my Derek Trucks SG so I really don't need another guitar but man oh man, this one seems like a bargain... (but don't they all ) It took all of me typing this to pull the trigger... Jake Blues
Sounds like the deal of the week (at least). Maybe I'm just "old school" (that's a nice way of saying "old"), but I rarely have the stomach to buy a guitar sight unseen/unplayed even from a reputable on-line source. THe downside is, I miss out on the deals. Let us know how she sounds/plays/looks.
JamGuy
I'm hoping it goes well too, obviously. From the looks of it some of the knobs have either had the tops fall off, or have been replaced. Of course this new member of the family will mean I need to unload another guitar... I have an Epi Les Paul that may be headed for the chopping block as a result. It's either that or my Cort Source (ES-335 copy). Oh well, they come and they go... JamGuy
I have to say... I can't think of a single time in all the years of horse trading guitars and buying instruments on ebay where I've ever felt truly burned. Maybe I'm just lucky. Sometimes they need a good shine and set-up but they're usually described (fairly) accurately. If the condition of the frets isn't mentioned I usually ask... that isn't something I can do (crown frets) and costs me about $60 at the local shop to have done. As far as scratchy pots or the like, it's a $6 fix and takes about 5 minutes. It'll be curious to see if I keep it or clean it up and resell it... I could clean it up and turn it around, and sell my Epi LP and almost be in the market for a "real" Les Paul... something I've always been inclined to do. Or, it may serve as a nice backup to gig with so I can keep the Derek Trucks SG here at the house. Time will tell...
JamGuy
Hey all... well the guitar arrived today and was actually in pretty nice shape. There's a spot on the back of the neck (that I was told about) where the finish has lifted off but it's minor in the big scheme of things. I was concerned to see a hairline (finish) crack sprouting from the neck pocket but I gave the neck a good stress test once it was strung up and it's stable. I would have liked to have seen a picture of that before I pulled the trigger but given the fact that it's just in the finish, having seen it first would probably have scare me off. Seems to be perfectly fine. I stripped all the parts off it when it came, gave it a once over with some cleaner wax and removed a few scuffs and she's looking top notch. The serial number checks out to a 2003 and the control cavity innards are all good to go... gibson pots and untouched joints. This one has Gibson Deluxe tuners, I believe my Derek Trucks has Kluson Deluxe. The beveling on this one is not as deep or smooth as the DT but I'm confident it's not a fake... I'll try to get some pics up soon. All in all, I think it was a good score. Is there a definitive site full of SG info... model year specs and the like? I've seen a few but wonder of any of you have any favorites I've missed? Cheers, JG One interesting thing about the guitar was that one pot is dated in black sharpie 7/21/03... the serial number dater said "Your guitar was made at the Nashville Plant, TN, USA June 17th, 2003 Production Number: 244. I guess this is a good thing that at least those dates are close. Has anyone else seen a sharpie dated pot in their Gibson guitar?

JamGuy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJQEZuFbtwY I'm trying not to be too bothered by the finish crack in the neck joint, but it has been on my mind... the guitar is staying in tune, and after poking around various forums, it seems it's not that unusual for these guitars to suffer from temperature sensitivity issues, and hence, some finish cracking around the neck joint. Given that it was -30 last week when the guitar shipped from Wyoming, perhaps that's what happened. I'm not going to bust the sellers nuts about it... it cosmetic and it was a good deal so I'm willing to let it go. I'll just know to ask more questions about future guitar purchases. Like picks of the neck joint area. Enjoy the new vid... I'm loving the guitar!
