New (old) Guitar - 1951 LG2 test drive

Gday all...some will know I recently won a LG2 on Ebay here in Oz- $1600.Thanks to help from the good people here (especially Nick) it was established as a 1951 model. It arrived at my office today.I'd never seen one before let alone played one.

So first impressions was that it was a featherweight.Couple of tight cracks on the top...supposedly stable and cleated...haven't looked inside yet...except to see ..yea it's X braced so LG2 not 1.

Action is low, still a decent amount of saddle. Seller made a big deal about the poor refinish...but it actually looked fine to me and it is nitro...i think...a little more matt than my J-45.

Neck is 1 11/16th.That took a little getting used too as I'm used to wider nuts now.It feels good to play and tone is gibson.A little brighter than the J-45, but still plenty of bass.I really like the way it sounds strummed...check out the open Em in a couple of places in the clip.Old strings, i think maybe 11's..I prefer 12's..should be ok to change up?

Playing is a bit rough as I just started learning this on the weekend.Thought it was a good tune to show picking and strumming as well as up and down the neck.Keep your lamps trimmed and burning and keep pluckin.

Oh that little monster sounded great. So glad you got her mate, and the price for Oz conditions is bargain !

I really like the bright, little grumpy tone of that LG, I think its right on the money, especially for this style of playing.

btw: when I was in Oz I picked up the new Tex Perkins and Dark Horses album. Was just listening to it yesterday with Mrs EA. I think you wiill really dig it as its very much along the lines of your tunes, and me thinks Charlie Owen played some lovelly old J-45's on that album. Check it out, its self titled.

Fellers that's terrific feedback. Thanks so much.

I did have a pang of self indulgent guilt just after I bought this.ie already got two very good acoustic guitars - shouldn't really be buying another. But I know I'll get a lot of enjoyment from it though- and I don't owe anyone money..haha.

But you guys know how it is....preaching to the converted.

Congratulations on getting an LG-2, one of the best guitars ever made for just sitting around and picking. Of all the vintage guitars I've ever owned, the ONLY one I really miss was my '60 LG-2. Mine was great with 12-53 or so light gauge phosphor bronze strings - I used the old Guild strings for years, then D'Addarios, and if I still had that guitar it would get John Pearse phosphor bronze light gauge and I'd be done with it. I suspect that $1,600 is a good price now, even in the U.S., as demand for these little guys has jumped way up.

Enjoy!

EA a friend of mine mentioned she was buying that Tex Perkins CD...she'll do me a copy hopefully.I have an EP of Tex, Don and Charlie somewhere..good stuff.

BBG,a little harder to play than the Martin..Martin is 1 3/4".Martin tone doesn't have as much bite, more mellow...which I guess isn't the way the normal comparison between G and M goes.I'm not so good at waxing lyrical on tone differences...but I enjoy them both...in their differences.

Just standard tuning...hope it hadn't slipped down in tuning that quick.

listened last night with the earphones FB . you should e well chuffed with that purchase .sounds lovely and suits your style very well i think .

kinda jealous

cheers mate...had a good strum of it tonight....would well suit your stuff as well....I got a few years on you and it took me a long while before I could afford more than one good guitar.sooner or later you'll pick up another gem or two.....I found that Elvis played one of these in a few of his movies...so I was going to post a photo of him playing it and say that mine smelt a bit like fried peanut butter sandwiches

and perhaps it was THE one.....but the only photo i could find was tiny so the joke might have fallen flat....i still think it is Elvis's...probably why there is so little fret wear...more for holdin' than playin'

Congratulations!

You got it already. Did you go to QLD and get it, to miss the middle man?

My Youtube (Broadband very slow in the day) is not working ,so I can't have a listen until later tonight....

Yes, I had a listen once the broadband traffic here toddled off to bed last night - very nice, FB!

You must be very happy with that little find - what is the catch? Is it a real 'player'? No bits missing? Very cheap for Aust.

Thanks mate..i'm kinda scared to look inside...from the outside its all good....a couple of cracks seem ok,fair bit of saddle still showing , tuners are stiff but work fine, neck is dead straight ....really enjoying it........next post will be a strumming song...medium strumming sounds very good to my ear.

maybe the refinish means a big price drop...doesn't worry me at all...i'll try to post a day time clip next as zoom camera is much clearer in daylight

The CF-100 would look pretty with my other 'Ls'....

Hey FB, where do you go a-hunting now Jacksons RG are gone, and to a lesser extent, BillyH/Allans?

Any other vintage acoustic shops in Sydney? If there was a shop, I suppose you would have bought something there, instead of eBay?
