E-minor7
So home from a trip into harsh winter all for the sake of art and acoustic guitars. Have a growing fever – from the windy frost-streets of the visited town far away. It was worth it – a little point by point report : Gibsons J-200 Standard – Wonderful bass, big future, let's meet again in the year 2019. J-45 Standard – More elegant sounding than mine – eeeeeh, can't say what I prefer. J-45 TV – Talking about elegance, this proud acoustic took it one step further. Is it really so – the vintage ones being more smooth than the rougher Standards. One would think the other way around, , , or am I totally off. . . 1958 J-45 – Ceramic saddled. Was in good shape and sounded like a cream-dream, still overpriced. I asked if he had looked inside and got a no. Without crossing any borders, I recommended him to do so. Nothing like any other vintage 45 I've heard – maybe with a single 1964 also ceramic saddled cherry as the exception. 2 Hummingbird Standards – The latter of these blew my mind being all I would want from a Bird. Might be the best Bird I've ever heard and had none of the issues talked about here now and again : quietness, stiffness and lack of real projection. Confirmed my general idea that TV's necessarily aren't better – just different* Robert Johnson L1 – A funny little box. Not my alley really, but right there in situation I suddenly caught myself sitting thinking about Onewilyfool he he. . . Martins M-38 – A very decent guitar. I knew that, but have found out I personally need full size Mart. dreads. Would recommend it anytime. 000-28EC (sunburst). HD-28 – One of the highlights on the trip. Sounded like acoustic heaven right off the wall. When it loosens up, it'll bit smashing. Made me wonder (again) if HD's are better for me than HDV's. HD-16R LSH – An intriguing vintage woody sounding creature with the big Clarence Whiteish sound hole. Could conquer a whole folk-festival with this one between the hands. How I liked it, but maybe too significant in the long run. Have richlite bridge and fretboard (check up this material) mmmmm. . . 00-28VS – For some reason had to play The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down on this 12-fret. A nice guitar, but not one I would need – slightly boomey. 00-18 - Well sounding, but not my alley. Other 1968 Epiphone Eldorado w. adjustable rosewood saddle insert – Excellent version of vintage voice, in fact bulls eye. Unfortunately the narrow width (something in the 5/8---9/16 area) and never tried with other saddle materials. Ceramic, bone, wood w. bone might make this a direct scoop. Strange the shop-people isn't interested in the experiment – perhaps they don't wanna spent cash on repairing the hole in the ceiling. Gurian of unknown model – a sympathetic guitar. Would be nice to encounter in a rented house : Ahhhhaaa, I see, , , a Gurian. . . . Yamaha APX-T2 - A very small black model for traveling – okay, , , , , for demanding and heavy loaded trips. Cool looker. Would bring you a lot of attention round the campfire – chicks would gather and ask for Beck-songs. You should deliver and add "some people call me the space-cowboy". The Joker – and BINGO ! *This flyer won't leave my mind – maybe I could get it over for a test. Wild thoughts in January - . . . . . . . . . . E-minor7
No living pics, so sorry. Haven't got the gear and to be frank, it would have caused a riot as the places were busy and closing. The different shops have me on spy-cams tho, , , doin' Angie, The Night They Drove, Act Naturally, You Don't have to Cry and some Jethro Tull to name the core. . . Sounds like you had a bit of Twang Central experience that i did recently, they are very dangerous trips .... Dangerous they can be - in seldom cases ground shaking
Del Nilppeznaf
Just throwing something in the pot do you guys think you can get a bit carried away while doing these expeditions ?..Going into places with all these wonderful guitars..and getting impressions ..that may not be so real ?????? Just taking EA's recent jaunt..and first impression changing significantly on second visit.. I think you need to get a guitar home and play it for a week before you can make any real judgement just sayin like Enjoyed the post all the same Em7..... you shure got the Bird fever
EuroAussie
I reckon two visits are a must, especially when you get all worked up about the holy grail you just came across. Second time round was still spectacular but a bit more rounded where I could better evaluate the value vs price equation. Anyway you look at it, these are bloody dangerous trips and you start getting into junkie mindset who's just had his best ever hit. Best to get off the clouds first before making any calls ... E-minor7
do you guys think you can get a bit carried away while doing these expeditions In all modesty I am a pretty experienced guy when it comes to visits like this. Actually gettin' carried away is what it is about. Being carried away in my age is jewelry in itself hehe, , , any topic - Apart from that I have an idea I know when this does not happen - the dull wall syndrome. This was up's and down's - but no way dull. In fact I phoned the shop this morning - Get your point tho, Del.
ParlourMan
do you guys think you can get a bit carried away while doing these expeditions ?..Going into places with all these wonderful guitars..and getting impressions ..that may not be so real ?????? I'm sort of with ye on this one, Delboy.... visiting a decent guitar store with a reasonable inventory, I can usually find at least one 'holy grail' guitar, be it old or new, sometimes several. If I'm just browsing, I remind myself I'm just browsing, but if I'm there with a view to buy, I'll be selling myself on some guitars without much coaxing from the sales staff. I'd even say it would have to be a fairly bad store where I just couldn't find one that I would consider owning... I also firmly believe the 'cherry picking' mentality strikes in, several times we see posts about the selected from x amount of the same model and so on, we also know that several people use the same stores, so some that have been dismissed in the 'cherry picking' exercise of one poster are probably the very same model bought by another poster. It's the old 'last chicken in Tesco's' employed on non-poultry based shopping. Sounds like a cool trip though Em7.

stein
I think, if you got the cash, and you have a guitar fettish, visiting guitar shops and playing buttlaods of guitars you don't need is EXACTLY what one should be doing. Life rarely reaches this level of bliss. Besides, it's good for the economy, good for the soul, and good for the poeple.

Fever is slowly lifting – I'm still horizontal. More from here in time. Thanx bbg. and all of you.

E-minor7
Ooh hoo ...youre soon going to have a whole nest of Birds it seems Em7 ! Yes, and I'm afraid of feathered birds in real life, they always went straight on my nerves, , loose canaries and such. . . But to be serious, I need to check what this flyer did to me in the store. A - to test my intuition when out 'partying' (so I can assure Del I'm not a gigling shop-fool - might be a challenge, but I'll take it). B - to understand where my improved TV is, what it might lack, where is has strengths and so forth. C - to generally make the grand Bird A/B down to every single detail. Already saw drops of splashing glue in the Standard, no real issue. We'll see - it will be like developing an old fashioned photograph in chemicals. . . Im going to make a big call and predict you will buy this Bird and sell the TV. The feeling I get is that you finally found what you wanted in an ideal Bird with this standard. And lets fact it Em7, you've been battling with the TV for a long time trying to be something you envision but not getting there. Similar case with my 69er, which I wanted to sound like a Bird, but in the end it wasnt and it was only settled until I got the TV. Thats my prediction, you heard it first right here folks.. Del Nilppeznaf
HOho I would never claim you to be such Em7.only, i think you just can't make these calls on the true character of a guitar while playing in the store environment with all the distractions that entails. You need to get them home..where you are used to the acoustics, have real quality time ect' before you can make a real judgement....... especially when judging against the same models already in ones herd. So i believe you are doing the right thing my man. my prediction is..it will not be so special compared to your other Birds...and you will realize the TV is where you want to be heading. I'm assuming these standards where fitted with electronics and have the new pg's? If not what year are they ? I will await your findings with great interest good tidings
E-minor7
good tidings I read you and see your bet placed too. A little fun-game established there already. TV or Std. Who knows – but other factors play in. The tuning of the CNC's for example. There are 4 years between these two and another thing is that nobody knows what steel is on except that they're factory-12's. Can anyone tell what comes out of the plant these days – the Q has been raised before.
