Speedyoneuk
Hi All, Has anyone on here tried DR Rares 12's on their Hummingbird. A mate of mine swears by them although he has a Maton Messiah. I must admit they do have good tone and sound good to me. any comments?
EuroAussie
I find the Rares to sound a bit flat, much prefer DR Sunbeams for the Bird'.
telemaster03
I currently have a set of DR Dragon Skins on the J45. I was dubious but bought them on the recommendation of a player I admire. So far, so good.
Speedyoneuk
I've been looking at maybe trying the dragon skins as I do believe they are a coated string that sound as good as an uncoated. Just a bit pricey in the uk. I do tend to change my strings quite often so they would be a pricey option for me.

EuroAussie
Theyre a funny lot the Dragonskins from what I recally. They feel a bit odd, especially the high BE strings. Sort of a little rough, takes a while to get used to them. I found them to be quite OK, but not great. They give out a very dry tone, so if youre after that might be worth a try. EuroAussie
i thought you liked them , am i getting mixed up ? is it the sunbeams you like ?  Yeah, its the sunbeams, but my most prefered brand for the SJ and Bird right now are Pyramids. They are the cheapest strings you can buy in Europe as theyre made in Germany and sound superb on mahogany Gibsons, and last a good while.  http://www.thomann.de/gb/pyramid_western_strings_012_052.htm  I now only use the Sunbeams on my J-150. Used them also on the Furch but as I use this guitar now more for fingerpicking I whacked Martin SP 80/20's on that little fella to get a bit more bite. Â will do , last experiment was with 11's .. didnt notice much difference to fingers , i dont do a lot of bending , but while i didnt notice much of the rumoured volume drop , there is a slight tone difference and i am pulling them sharp sometimes i think .. back to 12's from now on
j45nick
i thought you liked them , am i getting mixed up ? is it the sunbeams you like ? Â Â It's the Sunbeams I like as well. I am not a fan of coated strings, although I use them on a couple of guitars that don't get played very much.
onewilyfool
I think I remember that DR strings are "hand wound", but are they also round core or hex core??

blindboygrunt
what should be the difference to the ear between round core hex core etc . is there one ? or is it just for the fingers of the player to notice anything ?
GuitarLight
Everyone I know who has a Hummingbird uses only Elixir strings...usually 80/20 lights nanoweb. A Hummingbird is often not loud, and Mahogany doesn't produce a lot of base. Yes, Elixirs will fix it to sounding the way a Hummingbird is supposed to sound. Motherofpearl
80/20 elixirs on a bird? I always used PBS on all hog guitars.
