Toogy
I'm looking into getting a Les Paul and came across a few faded finish Les Paul standard's on ebay that claim to be brand new. But according to Gibson's site, they don't offer this finish anymore. So I'm wondering what year these guitars would be? Also I'm a little weary of buying a les paul on ebay, is there somewhere I can run the serial number to double check that it is legit?
t-bone
They've made them up to and including 2008. Not even sure they've stopped making them yet. Run the serial no. here: http://guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx (found this link on page 2 of this forum) good luck with that, the Std Fadeds can be awesome. I've seen both some very good ones and some very bad ones. I returned one to my local shop recently which had a very severe dead spot on the neck. I'd be a bit hesitant to buy ANY guitar untested. MikeRom
I didn't buy my '05 standard faded until '07 but it was still sold as 'brand new' (guitar center)
Toogy
Thanks for the info. I know what you mean (buying untested), but the price is right and they do offer a 7 day return guarantee. There are no local shops that carry much selection and their prices are WAY higher!
RichCI
As long as they at least have a return policy, I'd be okay with it. Just be prepared to pay for shipping if you do decide to return it.
t-bone
Return policy + decent looking seller = go for it! Could be the best thing you ever did! Welcome to the LP crew, there's no way out once you're hooked!
Toogy
One other question about the faded standards.... is the back of the neck faded as well? Similar to the vintage mahogany studio Les Pauls? I really like that feel over the "sticky" necks on most other Les Pauls.
Thundergod
Yes, it is faded too. Most confortable neck Ive played. I hate sticky necks too. Welcome to the forum
t-bone
VERY comfortable necks, indeed. I prefer the "'60s slim tapered" shape over the "'59 rounded" though, and I think they did stop making Faded Stds with 60s necks a while back. But, with the return policy, see if you like it. Very little to lose, except perhaps transport costs?
GuitarJunkie
As far as the original question, the faded models with the '60s neck were discontinued last year. The '50s neck version was discontinued a couple of months ago. Whether that's when they actually stopped making them or if they made a few more batches, you'd have to ask Gibson.
