Which Guitar For TV Show?

You're playing away at the normal humdrum Saturday Night gig and after you have said goodnight, a woman comes up and introduces herself as Dave Letterman's talent scout/producer who says she likes your act and would you like to come on 'Dave' in 3 weeks time.....

You say YES and she gives you $20,000 to buy a presentable outfit and any guitar you want...................

Which guitar do you want?

I'm not sure right off, but I know it would cost 20 large, if they don't think I'm presentable they must be blind.

I know this'll draw some flak but...

Depending on what guitar I'd use for which gig... whatever I was playing.

Rock/country/blues probably it would be my Epi Dot. Jazz probably stedda the 175, the "it's awfully nice but if you break it, it ain't the end of the world" Eastman one-pup copy thereof. Cowboy/folkie probably the inexpensive but surprisingly nice-sounding and playing Epi PR5e.

Yeah, I have, and could have an inclination toward other far more expensive boxes but...

A new pair of Wranglers tailored to my aging get-along; a new pair of Tony's or Niconas, new shirt, vest and probably just a dark storebought Stetson or Resistol creased to the local standard 'cuz it'd likely take too long for Weather or Star of the West to make me a new hat. I've got a suit or two to wear on the plane and I'd probably buy shoes to go through airplane bullpookie. Ain't worn shoes in 20 years.

My reasoning on the guitars and lack of heavy spending on "take out" instruments is that any of those three are competent and reliable performers for the genre. If any of the three were damaged en route, they could be replaced and set up at most decent guitar stores. Yeah, I'd likely do a real 335 'stedda the Dot or a 175 to replace the Eastman and ... doggone it, probably another PR5e if it were broken en route. That last could vary if I found a medium-small AE Gibbie instead, but that size/shape/setup I have on mine now is pretty close to letting me play what my head sez is inside.

But... Hey, a new 175 just might come home with me regardless just 'cuz it'd be new - or a medium/small Gibbie AE. The dot vs. a 335... the Gibbie would reeeeeally have to play nice to replace the Epi. I know that ain't quite politically correct.

As for clothes... I'd guarantee she'd see me wearing a variation of what I described above and probably one of those three guitars this time of year.

If you said Jay Leno Id believe it,but David Letterman would offer you $500..put it in the contract that you must buy new outfit for the show from your own pocket but can only to be used upon his approval..Oh yeah and a $50 voucher for travel costs...(which you must back up with reciept for re embursement).

Any guitar that Junior Brown's hands were attached to.

A friend gave me a video years back which is one of the few times in BK777's life he has been left speechless.

Well Letterman probably didn't pay enough, so he had to go on the other channel and built a rather fancy guitar for himself!

(Sorry JZ, you don't have Broadyband and mine don't work so good either, but for the punters here that have never seen Junior Brown play - well, take a seat....and I have even hijacked my own silly thread....)

I love all his stuff, but found this first:

In the unlikely event that this could happen, I would play my '53 J50 and then make a trip to St. Jude's Children's Hospital where I would entertain the kids and present St. Jude's with a check for 20 grand. And it would be the greatest day of my life, knowing that I'd been on Letterman AND got to help out my favorite cause.

Get the picture – nowadays every guitar works for tv, blinged or non-blinged. I would go for something rather non-blinged as TV-shows are so blinged themselves.

Remember seeing the dude from The Low Anthem on Letterman with a taped together Norlin J-45. It looked good, yet they kept the yellowish tape out of the frame, not showing the real state of the 'wreck'. Better stay towards the middle.

So my choice is seen in my steadfast avatar : The 1963 SJ takes the Sullivan Theater - polished free of sticky fingers.

Thanks for the replies,

BUT

You people aren't playing the game right! You are supposed to pick a guitar!

You DON"T get to keep the money you have not spent on guitar and outfit - you get a chance to buy the best guitar under $20,000 and some duds to go! If the producer sees you turn up in your old clothes with the same old guitar, she will tell you to go home!

So in a mad panic choice to get the thread a-happening, here is a few I would like to choose from......................................and get a bit of time playing before the big night..........................I'm sure there are some more expensive in that shop you know!

Now that I know the rules, I'll play. I would buy the batch 910 rosewood 1943 banner SJ I almost bought this weekend, and have myself a custom denim jacket and some fancy boots made with the money I had left over.

Then they would throw me off the show when they realized how lousy I am.

But I would still have a great guitar, and some cool clothes......

Naaah. That's a Jumbo. I'd want the little L00 size of the middle 30's. Ya' know what I'd play for my TV debut? Hank Williams' 'I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You'. That or Neil's 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'. Flatpicked. I'd like to just get to the chorus before they give me the hook.
