jannusguy Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 i bought a little danelectro U2 at a pawn shop this weekend. will find out if it's a reissue when i get around to removing the neck. anyway, i plugged it into my acoustisonic to see if pups are working and they are. just wondering if someone can recommend another amp that won't break the bank but might be more suitable for an electric. i don't play out and it's strictly for my own amusement so i'm not looking for anything too fancy as i'll always default to acoustic. thanks for any help you can offer.
RichCI Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 It really depends on the style of music you want to use it for (the type of tone you'd like) and what your budget is. If you're looking for clean tones, I love old Fender Champs. You can pick up a used silverface (1970's) model on Ebay for less than $500 which will be a 5 watt, hand wired, tough as nails Fender amp.
jannusguy Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 looking for some versatility but am otherwise in the dark. will check out the champs. thx for your input. or is it output? ha!
RichCI Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Ha ha! Well, a Champ isn't the most versatile amp in the world; it's mainly clean sounding and you really have to crank it to get any level of overdrive out of it, particularly with weaker pickups like a Danelectro or Fender guitar; you can always get an overdrive pedal but that will start to raise the amount of money you'll be putting into the setup. Here's a video I made of me playing my Les Paul through my Champ and adding in an overdrive pedal. Be kind - I had been drinking when I made this.
Taylor Player Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Hey JG... I just picked up a used Peavey Delta Blues 30 watt all tube amp and love the way my Eric Clapton Sig Strat sounds through it but I have almost been playinig more acoustic through it lately. I have a great Genz Benz Shenendoah 200 watt acoustic amp too, but I am loving the tone through this old delta blues amp. It might be the 15" speaker or just the nice clean tube sound but it really sounds nice with my guitars. The Strat just cooks through it though. It has great natural overdrive and with my multi effects pedal, the distortion is also quite nice, but I love it most for the nice bluesy clean and overdrive tones. It also has a nice spring reverb and a tremolo which you don't find on too many amps. You can find these for under $500 on Criagslist or Ebay occationally.
Murph Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 The Taylor guy speaks the truth. As mad as I am at Hartley for building Peaveys in China, the Classic series amps are a good bang for the buck. As long as they are American. When he moves production of THEM to China it's time to give him the boot. I actually already have. I'm dumping all my Peavey gear, most is just old junk now anyhow. Mesa is good gear, but it will "bruise" the bank...... Best to ya. Murph.

ChanMan Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Pop down to the local Sam Ash or GC and play a few different amps. You might find a SS Line 6 15 watt amp to be perfect for what you need. You may decide a VOX AC15 is more to your liking. You may find out that there really is no substitute for a Marshall stack. Ok probably not that last one, but....
jefleppard Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 it has been my experience that tube is the way to go with single coils. solid state will land you at the corner of no balls blvd and spineless street! that champ in the vid sounded sweet and i like the peavey but you'll not need a lot of wattage. through the magic of the gibby lifestlye page i learned that size does in fact not matter. it reports that clapton recorded 'layla' with his strat through a 3W gibson amp. something small for the house will do you fine but go for the tube and the danelectro should be fine - they are fun guitars. if you have a recording platform on your pc/mac, mic the amp and run it through there. it opens up a world of tonal possibilties and makes for more civilized condo/apt living. you can rock out stadium-stlye w/headphones and no one will ever know. post a pic when you get a chance.
