ztiesman
I am sort of a new guitar player that has been trying to find the "right" guitar for my style. I had an Epiphone Dot that I got on the cheap that I really liked. It just didn't scratch that distorted overdrive sound that I wanted. So I hit craigslist to see if I could find a trade and ended up with an Epiphone SG 400 Custom. Gotta say I am loving it so far. Any other SG-400 custom owners have any advise? brad1
Welcome to the forum G400 custom owner! I love my G400. My first piece of advice would be to learn that around these parts, pics are a must. We have a phrase we use around here a lot. "No pics - didn't happen". In other words, you need to post pics of your new G400 custom so we can live vicariously through you. Stick around this place and you will fill your mind with much knowledge. And probably make a friend, or two.

I love that body color and in fact I'll be working on a tele project and that's the color I want for the body.
brad1
Awesome! Thanks for the kind welcoming. Here is my baby: [thumbup] My first decent electric guitar was my 2006 G400. I now own 7 electric guitars. But my G400 is still my overall favorite. :)
ztiesman
I need to polish up the pick up covers, they are pretty dingy looking. I love the color too!

disaster
To keep the neck slick & fast as new get Gibson's Guitar Polish. Highly recommended. Been using it on my G-400 since new. Enjoy.
bonzoboy
My Missus gave me an Epi G-400 Custom for Christmas about 4 years ago and I absolutely love it.My daughter's boyfriend tried out my G-400 and he said that it was better than his Gibson SG in every way.My daughter gave him his own G-400 Custom for Christmas and now his SG is relegated to the closet.BTW if you are looking for something to keep your gold plating shiny yet doesn't wear the finish off, check out Sparklean cleaning solution and cloths.Since I've discovered them that's all I use to shine up the chrome and other shiny bits of my guitars. You can order it from here: http://www.sklean.com/ or Phone (786)-287-9981 or toll free : (866)-772-7556 this stuff is by far the best cleaner for precious metals and chrome that I've ever used,it works wonders on tarnished brass. ztiesman
Thanks all, I am still a beginner so I am still learning the ins and outs of the hardware. I am trying to wrap my head around how the 3 volume controls work with each pickup. I have searched online for some sort of FAQ on how these work with eachother but haven't found an dumbed down version. Anyone know where I can find or explain to a newbie how these work and how each pickup yields different tones? Thanks in advance. You guys are awesome. Oldhippie
welcome to the forum !! take it slow.....nobody of us was born with a guitar in his hands. exercise regulary and don´t get nervous if it doesn´t sound right. It´s getting better all the time . (lennon,McCartney :-)) I propose the homepage "Chordie.com" to search many many songs for guitarists. It shows you how difficult / easy a song is by stars. And of course Youtube Have fun with your nice guitar!!
Bender 4 Life
great score & fine choice of guitars !! the "treble bleed" caps on the volume knobs keep it from getting muddy as the volume is wound down....which is great! advice? don't forget that it's 3 volumes 1 tone VVVTas opposed to VTVT used on 2 p'up guitars. looks almost identical to mine
Bluemans335
I wired my SG Custom so that the tone konb is connected only to the bridge PU. I never turn down the treble on the neck and middle, and taking off that 500K pot and it's load opens up the sound of those two PU's more.
Jerry Rig
Hey All, I'm a proud new adopter of the ivory G400. I've swapped out the stock pups for dimarzios: D Activator in bridge, Super 2 middle and PAF Pro in the neck. The stock pups were actually really good but I was not happy with the lack of tone variance from one pup to another. I'm still getting used to the new pups, but noticed the treble bleed caps when I was doing the swap out. Has anyone seen this blog and video: http://www.planetz.com/a-bloody-mess/ It is a good demo of how treble bleed caps can muddy the sound if you are playing settings with more than one pup wired together. Of course with the G400 you are always playing with the middle pup wired to neck or bridge or both, so this is a real drawback to using treble bleed on the G400. Anyone know the history of using treble bleed on the G400? I'm considering pulling off all the treble bleed caps on this guitar.
Bluemans335
The first thing to do is get Dan Erlewine's book: "How to make your electric guitar play great' from Stewmac, if you don't already have it. You should be able to do your own basic set ups. What year is your Custom? Epi gradually started upgrading PU's in 2010 and yours may or may not have them. Play it a while and see what you think about the tones. If you want better, a couple great sets for SG's are: Bridge: Duncan C5 (SH-14) Middle: Duncan '59B Neck: Duncan '59N Bridge: Rio Grande BBQ Middle: GFS Mean 90 Neck: Rio Grande Texas
