Hi Guys,

I just purchased this beautiful 2008 Gibson Hummingbird recently (used) which I like a lot.

The sound is so much different than my 2012 Gibson J 45. I understand they use same spruce top, mahogany back and side and even x bracing patterns.

I put the same 0.12 Elixirs Phosphor Bonze Gauge. Both Standard model. Only the body shape that has significant shoulder model that I noticed. They're both wonderful!

Just wonder if you have options between these two guitar models only, which one do u prefer and why?

Just wanna know and have some input for my self. Haha...

Thanks and cheers!

Al

Welcome to the forum. The reason why they sound different is because one has a sunburst and the other a vintage burst of course ... ;-)

I generally gravitate to the tone of slope shoulder Gibson personally.

Thank you : )

Now I wonder how's J 45 in a Daphne Blue sounds like! Haha just kidding...

Yes on my lap, the slope shoulder comfier and love the depth sound!

Cheers ! : )

I love them both. I have slope shoulders currently, but perhaps the best guitar I have ever owned, which I should have never sold, was the Gibson Sheryl Crow, which has very much in common with your bird. I wish I still owned her.

The Southern Jumbo!

I have never tried 'em in my life (SJ).

Must be a really nice one. You should get one again someday..! : )

Dino, welcome..... they are both beautiful!

Aren't you glad they don't sound the same?

I am! to be honest when I bought the Bird, I was a little bit worried it will sound at least similar to the J 45. But when I played it together for the first time, wohoo! The Bird was bright and has this sparkly tone while the J 45 has more deep, low but still so clear in the articulation.

Same wood material/species, totally not the same sound :D

They're both so easy to play. Love them!

Thanks for askin Rob! :)

Congrats on two superb instruments. Like many folks in here, I have a J45 and a Hummingbird and they do sound different, even though the woods and bracing are very similar. Part of the difference is the slope vs square body. Keep in mind that the neck and action are also part of the formula.......Two great guitars. You're living the good life. [thumbup]

My friend MissouriPicker, thank you for your comment! You have a nice pic with your Hummingbird there! I will definitely keep 'em with me always. We are living the good life, aren't we?

Cheers!

Thank you JC Thank you! Hopefully I could get a J 200 for my next acoustic. The Standard one is more than enough for me :D

As an owner of several quality guitars, I can tell you my new SJ-200 standard is a cut above them all. It is a keeper for life.
