Hexeir Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I don't like cheap straps. This is the first acoustic I actually like enough to USE, so I'm getting a strap for it. I want to make sure of two things: 1) The strap comes ready for an acoustic. 2) It will fit around, and hold snugly onto, the gigantic strap button on my guitar. (Has the jack built in)
powerpopper Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I have Gibson Acoustic guitars that have the gigantic "button" that has the jack. I have had to cut the hole just a little larger in order to get it snug on every strap I have. If there is one designed for those jacks/buttons, I would love to know about it.
Jayla Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Have a look at Sully's Straps. As for the strap lock that fits around the pickup jack, somebody recently posted a link to an interesting product that takes care of just this issue. I can't recall what it's called, but maybe they'll weigh back in... No need, I just found it. Look here, and then check out this thread for other ideas.
John Lee Walker Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I started a thread about this a week or so ago, looking for this strap I had in mind. Braided, shoulder pad, distressed leather, rustic looking. Found one but the artist doesn't seem interested in building straps right now. So, several people posted links to strap sites - Sullys included - and I browsed thru them all to no avail. Saw this thread and the link posted by Jayla and went there again. I must have missed the 'more vintage straps' link the first time around. Went to page two and - voila' - there is my strap. No. #281, braided tack rein with a shoulder pad, very nice. Jayla, thanks much for posting that. Mucho appreciated. You rock man! Hope you find your strap Hex!
ballcorner Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Believe it or not, there is no such thing as a strap that is pre-designed for the end jack on an acoustic electric. You can take a standard strap and cut the slot a little longer to make it install on the AE end jack - but a better solution is to order one of these from Tapastring (10 bucks includes shipping) and then you can buy any strap in the world that appeals to you - perhaps one like mine:
Jayla Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 You're welcome John Lee. And if you get one, I'd like to hear your opinion about it. I'm not currently in the market for a strap, but when the time comes those Sully vintage straps'd be top of my list.
Thermionik Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 . . Babs Callousy acoustic straps - made from bull-hide with all it's recognised and proven acoustic benefits. You can't argue with the evidence - innumerable famous acoustic guitar players have come forward to say that their sound and in fact their performance all round has improved as a result of fitting these wonderful straps. Oh lordy - I can feel the torrent of abuse welling up already Babs Callousy - famous lady C&W finger-picker - is no way related to or in any way intended to mimic any person of similar name etc; etc; etc. Allegedly.....
Thermionik Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 . . Yeah - bad and sad, sad and bad - nothing better to do than write drivel on here. Man - I should crank up the bassman, but it's 1 in the morning and the lady would complain..... .
jchabalk Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 well JLW's had me looking at the custom straps for the last few weeks but my favorite readily available strap is the Levi M11 in black. They classify it as "Rockabilly." It's a pretty simple strap. 3/4" leather with a movable pad in the middle. I've got a 3 of them at this point. 1 with strap-locks on it, one without, one with one of those planet waves snap connectors for acoustic headstock connection. I think they cost around $30. I've had a bunch of other leather (and other) straps over the years, the M11 is my favorite by far and goes pretty well with just about any guitar shop. I can't find a picture of it but if you look at their site it's under rockabilly
Murph Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Gruhns has some nice straps. Nice day trip for ya. Murph.
John Lee Walker Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Hey Jayla - It's paid for:) Just talked with Sully and he reposted his website with strap #281 marked SOLD. He is doing a slight mod on it for me - adjustable leather tabs on both ends - and sending it this week. It's the perfect strap for Mama Lou. Thanks again, Jayla, I owe ya a beer, bro! I'll post pics if I can figger it out someday hah.

Jayla Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Cool that it worked out, John Lee. Look forward to seeing the pix if you can post em.
guitarstrummer Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Sully makes all of his straps and will provide an end piece that will fit over the pickup jack, as long as you tell him that's what you want. I've lost count of how many of his straps I own, but it's probably well over twenty and haven't had a problem with any of his straps fitting yet. You have to keep checking his websites if you're interested in his vintage straps. He only posts eight at a time and replaces them when he sells the ones posted.

I just got a great strap from Sully, but I'm always in the market for (and a sucka for) a good leather vintage strap that's unique. I will bookmark ya and keep you in mind - thanks!
Thermionik Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 . . otaypanky - those are some very, very handsome straps. Great attention to detailing too. Nice to see folk still making quality and style with taste. Anybody else - wait whilst the pages load - it is worth it, real nice straps. .
otaypanky Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Thanks so much guys . I really love making them.

ballcorner Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Levy's makes beautiful straps and they have an enormous array of styles and materials. I own a good number of their straps and find them all very comfortable and of exquisite quality. For your songwriter, you might also want an end jack clip for your new strap - a great example is this one from Tapastring. This helpful accessory is $10 and allows you to keep the original hole size on your new strap so you can use it for guitars with a regular end pin or those with a jack. Again, I now own several of these and am very happy with them.
