hey guys, so I came across a spare hummingbird guard and I was curious and also interested in maybe putting it on my martin d-35. Is that voodoo, a major no,no? I'm not worried about value because it's not getting sold, she's my baby. I measured it up to see what it looks like and .....she looks pretty damn good. Any opinions please.

Hey, go for it. I suspect it would be a mortal sin to some Gibsonites and some Martinistas, but it's your guitar. Personally, I think it's a clever idea. My duo partner has a Rogue and he put a Martin-like decal on the headstock and from several feet away it does look like it's a Martin logo.......If you do it, take a picture for us.

Another 'no' vote here, unless you're trying to alleviate those passive aggressive feelings. You're asking the wrong guy, I'm anti-pickguard anyway, especially toward big ones with cheesy etchings and drawings on them.

I woldn't do it.

Yeah, I was one of the purists back then. I thought the C&W had its own proud 1969 identity right there.

But I know you were hovering around the flora/fauna motif like half burning in that period and ahead you went.

To me it was kind of like dressing up to be something 'finer' than you are for a party.

The carpenter dressing up and acting like a man of books, becoming strange while forgetting how much pride there is in being a craftsman of woods.

But that's just the monk here, EA if it made you happy. . . (as another C&W rider would say).

I have to say that a year on, maybe more Im very happy with the sex change decision and would not go back. I simply believe as a purist square shoulder Gibsons should have Tulips and Slopeys butter beans. Now everything is in order.

When deeper things fall into place, the rest is just blah blah. . .

Pretty bland looking guitars most of those Martins eh..

The pickguard is a main attraction on a hummingbird but if you go ahead and do it..if it is one of those pickguards where the design/etching lends it self to it soon wearing off as many have said here, you'll probably regret it.

Its a good excuse to go buy a nice Hummingbird somewhere if you are at this point.

Thanks for the reply guys. Just out of curiosity I asked my wife her opinion and her answer kinda took me back. She flat out said NO! I admire her gusto but I'm still thinking it through. I will try and put a picture up later with it fixed on the guitar. Just so you guys get an idea. I will not apply it yet but just so you guys get an idea. Hopefully later tonight.

If your D-35 has one of those ugly thick black pickguards, replace it with a nice faux-tortoise pickguard of the proper Martin shape. Putting a 'bird pickguard on it would be a form of guitar miscegenation, and may result in the D-35's exclusion from polite company.

Besides, the hummingbird pickguard would be embarassed to appear in public under such circumstances.
