Kopp K35

I fell in LOVE with the Kopp K-35 at Mandolin Bros....What a guitar!!!....I compared it to a few vintage Gibson J-45/50's and believe me,the Kopp had that "old" sound and with a bass that blew my glasses off of my face!....Unreal!

I did not want to put up the cash for one, already having a few pricey guitars, but wanted to get as close as possible to that fantastic sound/build/appearance so I bought the Fuller's Custom Gibson 1939 J-35.....Got it 3 weeks ago and I am beyond thrilled.Incredible tone and superb build.very much what my mind's ear remembers about the Kopp.....All in all though, the Kopp reigns supreme,to me,in new J style guitars.Just fabulous!

Good Luck

It is the huge and dry low end ya hear it on the J-35s and the Banner J-45s/50s that is what to my ear really distinguishes them more than anything else.

It has that plus more. I also have a Ren built J35 from 2011 who's is light as a feather and a superb guitar. But the Kopp is a much better guitar to my ears. Hope I don't get raked over the coals for saying that but it's a fact! Plus I love the beefy neck too. But you can really feel the power when playing this guitar.

Just so you know... Kevin has agreed to open his shop to tours during the "Gibson Homecoming". If you really want to see two great guitar shops in action make plans to come to Bozeman. There is also a tour of the Waverly tuner facility. You can also visit a wonderful recording studio and if that isn't enough and it should be there is a tour of a great brewery as well. None of this costs anything. Kevin did tell me there would be no free samples but the brewery might be a different story. Kevin is going to have a "Roy Smeck and a J-35 there to play as well as works in progress.

Gibson has given away at least 12 guitars to the Homecoming folks in the past 8 years. No charge, just put your name in the box. Music Villa also gives away a free Epiphone. Two years ago Gibson gave away an amazing Custom Shop Firebird. High figured Quilted Maple worth about $6K. You never know what they are going to do. If you already won a guitar you are not eligible to enter again. There were about 25 folks last year and 10 of them had already won so the odds were pretty good.

There are plenty of jams and get togethers and an open mike as well for those that want to strut there stuff. Lots of old Gibson's to play.

Didn't mean to hijacck the thread. Just thought you might like to know about The Kopp tour.

Thanks guys! Ill get a soundbite up soon got a newborn here so haven't had much time for tinkering.

All the best.

Hogeye that's great Kopp is opening his shop. Is there a website for this whole thing that's going on? I'm interested in going but I'd like to check out how much it will run me first.

Google Gibson Homecoming. They have a website with all the activities. There is no charge for any of the events. They ask that you register so they can have an idea of how many folks will be doing the tours. Remember these are working businesses and they can't shut down for the day.

Not only does Bozeman have a lot of motels but they have all the usual camp sites. Bozeman Hotsprings is a great KOA campground with a very nice hot springs pool and spa. Norris Hot Springs is just 15 miles south of Bozeman and has great camping and a pool as well. They also have live local music. If you check with Montana State University you may be able to rent a dorm room for the week. I don't know if this is still an option but will try to find out for the forum. They have a student union and good healthy food options at budget prices.

Google: Bozeman Hot Springs and Norris Hot Springs. Chico Hot Springs is a bit further away in Paradise Valley South of Livingston. They also have live music.

The area around Bozeman is very special and as we are close to Yellowstone Park there are a lot of thermal features to take advantage of. Bring your camper, tent or sleeping bag it's all good. Don't plan on sleeping under the bridge. All the good spots are already taken.

Google Museum of the Rockies. This place is a world class must see.

Plan on seeing a lot of special guitars and playing a lot of music. This is a family event and there are kids so everyone is welcome to play and enjoy.
