My late Christmas gift

My son made me this unique & beautiful stand for Christmas. It took him a while (just got it yesterday) but it was worth the wait.

Made from one 7'X8"x3/4" cherry board. Many hours of laminating, gluing, and forming. Still needs to be rubbed-out in a few days...

I told him he had to make 7 more!

Thanks guys, I'll relay your kind words to my son.

RS: I tried to talk him into doing some more, but he has a couple of months in this thing. Of course all of the prototype work is done, so the next one shouldn't take as long. He had to build forms to shape the wood and get the correct angles, then he experimented making the bends with different thicknesses of laminates using cheaper wood. I guess there were a lot of failures due to cracks before he got the forming, gluing, and angles just right. There are 10 layers of cherry in the neck support. It turned out beautifully though - I've never seen anything quite like it.

His wife is happy too - she's wanted new end tables for a long time, and those are next, but they might end up looking like guitar stands!.

Hopefully an excuse for more guitars/basses for him too ;) If there's a way of flat packing it*, I may "need" a few :D BSB

*as shipping it to the UK may be expensive in its current form

You couldn't break this down for shipping BSB - all the joints are doweled & glued. He didn't want any visible screws in that cherry.....

That is just gorgeous!!! Being a hive dweller all of my life I've always been very envious of people that had the talent (and necessary room) to do things like this. Woodworking is an unresolved passion of mine. Just stunning.

As for wifey, I would say have your son make another one of these and then try the end table thing with two basses first. Of course, you couldn't put a beer on them, but it'd sure look purty! [thumbup]
