Studio faded vs. Standard faded

Recommended Posts

I think I've narrowed it down to wanted a faded finish LP as I prefer the feel of the faded finish on the neck of the guitar.

Now the question is, how much better would a Standard Faded sound than the Studio Faded? It's about $650 difference in price at the place I'm looking. Is it worth that much more? It does look a lot better, but is the difference in price just the finish and look? #-o

From what I see they have the same pickups.

Thanks for you time.

Standard is a classic guitar icon that will last a lifetime

Studio is good entry level first guitar

Most of the differences are finish and cosmetic and the studio's do play really good but usually there is some buyer remorse and trying to buy a Standard afetr a year or two.

Not trying to be a snob but the Standard faded is a great buy in guitars right now that won't be available much longer anyone who likes the faded look or feel really needs to get one before there gone.

i have a studio faded and its a hog body and cap...it sounds a little darker than the maple...but it has the BB pros...you cant beat those with a stick let me tell you!

plus i have had mine for over a year...i love it more now that the neck is getting faster and faster!

its a gibson...no binding...no flash...just raw power...i would liken the studio faded to a BFG for cheaper with a sanded down top!

i am not calling retrosurfer a snob because he has some hot guitars and my collection is only in its infancy but you will not be disappointed with a studio!

besides the raw look of the faded cherry and the worn brown are a lot cooler than the standard faded!

haha

pure opinion but you asked for it!

save your money and get another amp!

or a melody maker!

that way you could have both!

With a street price of $1400, I'd hardly call it entry level.

But I agree, the Standard would serve as a more versatile and valuable guitar. You could never go wrong with a Studio, though. They have a slightly hotter pickups that you can mess around with and see what you can produce.

So hard to decide!! I know I really want the standard more, but it comes down to budget, my girlfriend is chipping in some $$$$ towards a LP for a christmas gift to me and to get the standard I'll really be pushing the budget especially in time for christmas! and she really wants it to be under the tree for christmas day! lol

hi13ts, you're right...you can't go wrong with a Studio; but they are in fact entry level Gibson Les Pauls.

Before the BFG and VM, Studios were the cheapest Gibson Les Pauls you could buy, weren't they?

Toogy, the Standard Faded has different pickups, bindings and probably a nice flame top.

A Standard Faded will not sound better than a Studio Faded.

You and I may have a different interpretation of "better." That's why there are so many choices out there.

Play them and if you don't feel The Standard Faded is worth the extra $650, go for the Studio.

...and there I was saying I wouldnt buy anymore guitars... Now I need to go and buy another std. faded before they are gone for good!

I hear BB Pros dominate Studio Fadeds

which is good because they suck in everything else IMO

Go with the standard though...

Where is Thunder' date=' he has a studio faded right?[/quote']

I have a standard faded and a beaten studio (normal, gloss white finish, worn gold hardware).

Youu mean bb pros suck in the other guitars that have them or the fadeds suck in everything but the bb pros? Either way, could you elaborate? Ive read Tim doesnt like the bb pros either... wonder why.

Since money is a factor go with the VM. My son has one and the BB Pros sound great and the neck is like butter.

Do take time to try several VM's. Some of the ones that we tried sounded muddy but then we found a gem and

bought it right then and there. My sons guitar sounds nearly as good as my Standard and plays just as well.

Buy the VM and if you decide to trade up later, so be it, you won't loose a significant amount of money. Good luck, let us know what you get.

I was saying that BB pros are good in the faded.

And I am yet to play a guitar with BB Pros that I really like (invluding my own) they are too hot and muddy, really weird tone, it sounds alright with the neck pickup with volume at 6-8 and tone all the way up.

but otherwise

yuck

I wish I had a place like Guitar Center to go and try out lots of guitars, there is no place like that around here. The local shop has only about 5 LPs in stock, anything else I have to order in. They don't even have a VM in stock right now to try.

oh and for the record the two guitars I am trying to decide on are the VM (cherry finish) or a faded standard (honeyburst or tobacco burst). The VM is so much cheaper, but I know that I really want the standard...

The big difference (and it is a BIG difference) is the maple top on the Standard.

Where in Canada are you? The price difference around here isn't that big. The faded Standards go for about $1399.

just my opinion but i would defnately go with the standard, they are so much nicer looking in my opinion and the maple top does make a big difference. mostly for me though if i was decideing between the two i would probably go with the standard just because of the look, it's more classic with the binding and all the good ol stuff :]

London, Ontario.

Where can I get a standard faded for $1399? is that canadian? I was looking at more like $1750 canadian for a standard faded.

Yes, you're right. In terms of Gibsons, all Studios are entry-level. But it does tickle my brain to say a $1400 guitar is entry-level, but with Gibsons and its prices....

I can't imagine anyone would hate BB pros, Oilpit. They sound great on Standards and everything else. I believe the Studio faded also has it. So does the discontinued BFG. I sometimes prefer them over the '57 Classics. You might want to meddle with your amp settings and effects boxes. Also, volume and tone control on the guitar itself could make all the difference.

The thing I hate about the standard faded models is that the finishs are not consistent. Alot of the tops look like they were finished by someone who didn't know what the hell they were doing when they applied the finish. There are a select few here and there that are acceptable to me and that I'd buy in a heartbeat and then theres others I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole because they are so sloppy looking.

I have both also a Standard in Honeyburst and a black studio with BFG electronics there both nice the point I was making if you really want the Standard a Studio will come up short in the long run in a few years the 600 won't seem like much in 20 years you won't even remember that especially if it's a first Gibson that lasts forever

This one has a maple top:

I think I'd still get the Standard if I had the money, though. Just my opinion.
