Mississippi John Hurt

Stumbled across this video of John Hurt playing Spike Driver Blues. Got admit, it's the first video I've ever seen of John Hurt playing.

It's pretty good too! Filmed correctly showing a lot of the right hand technique. Also, if I'm not mistaken, I believe Hurt's playing Stefan Grossman's Martin OM-28 (42?) rather than his own store-bought Guild. I hear tell that Mississippi John used Grossman's Martin when recording the Today! album, and it's one of the reasons the sound stands out as being so smooth and deep.

Ah, Pete Seeger's Rainbow Show. Great footage. The guit is actually a custom guitar built for Uncle John by an admirer. Ive never seen any specs on it but it looks and sounds like a rosewood jumbo, kind of a proto M-series Martin. I dont think He ever recorded with it.

Here's another clip from the show. He also played on Irene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gytJemzNTM

I happened upon this one the other day myself...gotta like the man Mr. Hurt [thumbup]

Who woulda thunk a single chord song in G could pick so nice.

It's funny the pressure one can feel, even the fledgling pro's apparently, when asked to play something. Mr. Hurt didn't know what to play when asked. I was listening to an old clip of a young Bonnie Raitt, and in the pre-amble, she commented.."oh God...I don't know what to play"!. Maybe that's what Queen was talking about when they pen'd Under Pressure [laugh]

That is a great tune. I've been doing my best to play his tunes over the

past year, had this video on my favorites list. It's better quality.

Check it out.

His complete studio recordings CD is a great buy too. It also sounds pretty

amazing. Highly recommended. :)
