White pickguards!?! Pics added

So I strolled into a Long and Mcquade store today and was astounded to see a bunch o' brand spankin' new J45's with white 1968 style pickguards( the ones with logo on the guard )! I have seen 'em before on ebony guitars ( exactly like this one.... http://www.rainbowguitars.com/guitar/gibson-montana/1968-j-45-ebony-limited-edition/splmon01/gb), but never on a natural top or on a cherryburst top!

They looked really ugly IMO, the white guard on the cherryburst was plain hard to look at.

Imagine this guitar with a white pickguard.... http://www.rainbowguitars.com/guitar/gibson/1960s-limited-edition-j-45-vintage-cherryburst/rs45csnh2/gb

Just seems wrong to me.

Wish I'd taken a pic or 2 , I'll have to go back there and snap a few.

Weird , anyone else seen these?

Oh yeah.... I also noticed that 2 of 'em had laminated bridges too!!

I looked a a few other and sure enough one of the 2012 hummingbirds also had a lam bridge, so I guess they are still being used quite regularly?!?

Not my cup of milk either – but they must have been rather hip at some point in the 60ties.

Remember one member here telling how he and his friends tried to emulate them with white paper in college or something.

At first, I thought it was a white paper or plastic 'peel off' cover type thing.....but not so, on closer inspection....solid white plastic.

As far as the the logo on the pickguard goes, I have never been a fan. Even on the old ones like this.....

Went back today and snapped a few pics with my phone. Still not a fan of the white pg's on the 'bursts.

Not the best quality pics....

I don't like the sunburst/white combo ... the other two I could live with

I haven't been in the Gibson room of my local dealer forabout 6 months, but they had one of those black ones for almost two year. It may still be there. To date it is the best sounding j45 they have. They even comment on it. But who wants to buy a great sounding ugly guitar? If they would remove the Gibson symbol it would be livable on a solid color. I've seem a picture of a red one that does not look too bad. JT's looks pretty cool, but on a 45 with the big bat wing pick guard, not so much, IMO.

If the guitar sounds that good, I would buy it and replace that pickguard. Bet it would sound even better.

You're probably right and I have thought of that. But I would have to sell mine in order to get it and I am mostly content with mine. It also has one of those tone sucking adjustable bridges that works great onthat guitar. I have wondered what it would sound like with a bridge replacement.?
