Jack Hass
My nephew wants a guitar for Christmas so I trying to work something out for him. Which sounds better a new Epi Les Paul Junior or a used Epi Les Paul Special II with a Roland MicroCube? The second option is $25 bucks more but would give him an amp right away. Toss out the "save up for something better" argument. I agree it has it's merits but in this case budget *is* an issue and he has never played no no guarantees that he will continue playing after the initial honeymoon. I'm still scanning my local craigslist but it has been pretty dry for my price range. ($125ish. yeah that is weak, but hey, it is what it is...) rmngretsch14
I like the craigslist idea, I'd scan for used guitars at local music stores too, but I this the Special II is probably the better option-- it has a tune-o-matic bridge and neck pickup unlike the Jr, and if it comes with a microcube too than do it
Silverbursted
Hey Jack, very noble gesture on your part. Hopefully he will get into the guitar. But to be honest, you sure came to the wrong place. This place is full of fanatical guitarist, just take a look at the prices we are paying for a single guitar (up to 10x your budget). If I were to make a suggestion, try looking online at Musicians Friends, they have some descent starter sets. Good luck to you sir, and hope you find what you are looking for. RichCI
I'd go with the guitar/amp combo; solidbody electric guitars aren't much fun without an amp.
the_HEWC
I'd go with the guitar/amp combo; solidbody electric guitars aren't much fun without an amp. +1 my thoughts exactly.. And that would be a much better starting-kit than a pre-packed starting kit.. No matter how we all like good guitars, with a crappy amp or no amp at all a solidbody isn't much fun. AXE®
Do NOT buy a beginner a black guitar as a first, They will spend more time worrying about finger prints than playing it... I vote a combo unit for the l'il whippersnapper...
