John Lee Walker
The Pickguard Problem. As you can tell from close up photo, you can see the soundhole thru the pickguard and there are little white globs of something - glue, fiber, whatever - underneath the pickguard, seeming to follow the grooves of the pattern underneath. The rest of the guitar is immaculate, and I thought this looked shabby. Contacted Gibson, Bozeman sent a replacement p/g. Got here today. Yuck. Way too much red for me on a sunburst guitar, this pg would go nice on a natural finish. (gonna call and see if they sent this to me thinking I had the natural finish?) So, the pickguard decision is made, for the most part, now to find one. I want black and bound. Hard to get. Bill Nichols comes close with his black ebony and MOP inlay border. But, I'm not sure about wood. Does anyone know where I can find a black/creme bound plastic pickguard? Some companies have layered materials, not the same. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TWilson - Not sure the pre-war pickguard would work. I like this shape and style better. I like the Ray Whitley model on the WC, but if I were to buy one I couldn't bear the thought of separating them - I'd have to buy the Western Classic, too:) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3098/3101340554_967b4421f0.jpg?v=0 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3188/3101340568_6b1a326769.jpg?v=
TWilson
John Lee - I think this one would look nice if you could get one that doesn't allow you to see through it to the rosette. It's pretty clean looking I think. John Lee Walker
Looks like the same gauge and material, without the wheat scroll. I was surprised when I took the pickguard out of the UPS envelope, it was very pliable. I expected it to be a bit firmer like tort or laminated plastic. Just felt weird. I'm coming up with a really cool pickguard design with Bill Nichols. I think you'll like it. Probably cost me a pretty penny or two, but it will definitely be worth it. Hey how is that Rogue Spyder resonator you have there? You amp that?

littlejohnny
When I got a reolacement Pickguard for my j-45, it looked way to red, just like yours. But when I removed the sheeting on the back an attached it to the guitar it came out like the exact same color of the old pickguard.

John Lee Walker
Hey littlejohnny - that makes twice I've been told that today. Just picked up some strings at the local shop and the owner there told me the same thing, that they absorb the color/darkness of the finish because they're a bit translucent. I'll have to check that out. Thanks, man! But, I think I'm sold on the Nichols custom pickguard as of now. That is one beautiful pickguard for the color of the guitar.
