Yeah, but can anyone actually PLAY their SG?

Been playin' for over 30 years. No offense but it seems a lot of guys buy these guitars as collector's items, to be cool, tokens of the tribe or investments. Perhaps even to annoy their wives or girlfriends but who really, really , really enjoys the sweet poetry of the Gibson SG, plugged in and doing what they do best... making AWESOME hard frickin' music!!! I mean substantial, tone-filled, balls-2-the -wall-rock & roll! That's what I'm talkin' about!

Not sure about the rest of you aficionados but I bought mine to blast Satan himself from his fiery perch and teach his *****-*** who's boss!!!! I play mine EVERY single night for hours and at the end of the day, mates... that's what it's all about!

WHO'S WITH ME??

Amen! I never understood some of the people on this forum. They will wine about guitars not having a pretty enough flame or the pickup rings not being geometricly proportioned to each other or some other little cosmetic problem and call it a quality control issue. If the looks of a guitar are so freaking important to them maybe they should buy a picture of a guitar and leave to real ones to those who actualy play them. I buy my guitars to be played, not looked at. I couldn't give a barking rat's rump if my guitars will be worth $1.00 or $100,000.00 in ten years. I'm going to play the stuffings out of them and enjoy it!

I check out the Les Paul Forum from time to time just to revel in the "my guitar's shinier than yours" nonsense. The best thread there was one that featured the collection of some Japanese obsessive-compulsive who had around 50 flame-top Les Pauls, every one CHAINED inside a glass case! I was the only one there who thought the whole concept was repugnant. My LP is a player: '70 Norlin, pancake body, shallow top, plain gold top, lots of rash on the back (and neck) but it sings.

Next up will be an SG to add to Lester and my 335 -- which I've been playing nearly every day since I bought it.

It's nice to have an attractive guitar, but that's not why I buy Gibsons. It's the racket they make.

Congratulations on your 30 years playing. I've never owned a SG and, although I pick most every day, I quit playing out about 30 years ago. But I still feel compelled to respond to your comments.

I can't make the connection between what someone else collects, whether stamps, coins or musical instruments, and how much time you or I spend playing our guitars. Collecting stuff and making music are two entirely different activities, although not necessarily mutually exclusive. If I could offer anything at all it would be the suggestion that you try to not let the interests and enjoyment of others mitigate your own enjoyment of those activities in which you choose to participate. It's a big world. Rock on. =D>/

I've owned my SG for 32 years, and I'm still playing it. I don't think I'd scare Satan with my abilities though. Just like I'm glad there are people who appreciate the fine lines of this classic axe, I'm glad there are people who can play these beasts clean and raunchy. Inspirational!

I think it's okay to have a guitar or two that you're particularly careful with and want to keep looking nice...I mean, if Gibson would make my dream SG I'd probably baby her like a MoFo and would keep other people's greasy paws off her, but I'd still have a hard time resisting the urge to crank one of the Marshalls up and hear her scream some. =;

I'm most careful with my custom-ordered Historic SG/LP Standard and my '01 '61RI with Vibrola, but they all get the 'proper' attention they deserve, and a couple of them (Angus Signature, Epi Ltd Ed's with Vibrola) get downright abused! tongue.gif

Like with everything from art to sports to weaponry, you're ALWAYS gonna' have people who buy the stuff just to have it. But most people I know who collect art can't paint. Most who are into sports have ZERO athletic prowess. And the people I know with the most swords and guns are terrified of the idea of actually having to USE them. Same with guitars sometimes...for every Rick Nielson there's gonna' be some fatcat with a 6-figure income who just looks at them as decor and can't play for squat. Might be one of those "to each his own" situations or whatever.

I'm not gonna say I can play my guitar since I live in an Earth where walked people like Clapton, Hendrix, Allman, BB King...

BUT, I play for (precisely) ten years now (still strugglin) and I pick this lovely ladys every day I can and squeesh all the juice I can. I don't think they are happy locked in a friggin locker. And don't think that the good-hearted people who work to craft them would be happy as well.

But that's just my personal opinion and I may always be wrong.
