Had a jam with some guys yesterday

and one guitar player used his iPhone for his sound.

Quite interesing thing with lots of options.

However I do prefer my "traditional" setup with

amps and effects.

More organic and feel for the tone.

What do you guys think?

I'm in a new project where everyone plays through a pod (like a mixer and headphone distribution center combined) - electronic drums, 2 guitars, bass, keys, & vocals; we all listen through headphones. I use a GT-6B, one guitarist has a GT-10, the other guitarist uses an i-Pad with apps for amps & effects. The i-Phones & Pads are good practice tools and work well as far as not bothering the neighbors, but certainly aren't like the real thing (IMHO). Even though rehearsing thru the pod sounds pretty good, I like to "feel" the music. When I practice at home, I prefer to go to the basement and crank up an amp. Sitting in front of the computer with headphones gets boring, and that's what playing through this pod with digital preamps & effects is like - boring... With that said, I've never heard anyone play with an i-Phone through an amp - it might sound great, and it would be a real cheap way to buy effects.

What happens if you're playing through your i-phone on stage and it rings???[scared] Ha!

I use Amplitube and 2 other software modeling packages (Guitar Rig and ReValver) at home and in studio. As a Technologist I am a big fan of modeling technologies but will say that it takes a level of commitment to make them a viable replacement for traditional amps and effects. I have fairly large investments in computer systems, interfacing technologies and time and effort to get to the point where I find these technologies acceptable alternatives in certain environments.

I think the future of these technologies is bright. As modeling continues to improve and they approach sonic parity with any amp/effect rig it will be difficult for young players to opt for heavy, complex, trouble prone equipment that can put at risk their art and their bank accounts. We are already seeing front line artists adopting these technologies. Yes, some as part of endorsement deals but others for reasons artists have always explored new technologies (you know, like tube amps back in the day) to expand their musical palette. I can envision a day when the big guns of the day will carry their rig in a laptop bag providing a line out to the house system. John McLaughlin already does this. Dweezil Zappa and others rely heavily on the Fractal Fx and rigs laden with digital equipment. And Steve Howell of Yes and Asia has toured with Line 6 amps. Look at it this way,our televisions no longer have glowing vacuum tubes and we now have high definition to enjoy. Our eyes see much better pictures with digital TV’s. Why can’t we accept the idea that our ears will hear much better sounds with digital systems, if not already, in the near future?

I use Amplitube 3 at home when recording a lot since the only time i have to do it is late at night when the wife and baby are sleeping. I've been VERY happy with the tone I am getting out of it. I wouldn't use it for a live setup, but for recording, its awesome.
