Michellle102003
i would like to buy my husband i new guitar for christmas. i dont know very much and guitars so im not sure what to get. he already has a ginson les paul deluxe 1970something that he loves. i was thinking about getting him another one because he does love it so much. (is that ok to have 2?) he plays in a band every weekend(rock music) I asked his brother about it and he told me i should get him a gibson 335...i looked them up and the reviews mostly said good for jazz or blues. i only have 2200 dollars to spend. Is there a good guitar that i can get for that price? Any ideas on the type? les paul or not? please help
RichCI
An ES335 would be a very cool guitar. If you go with the Gibson ES335 Satin you can pick one up for around $2000 if you shop around a bit. Here's the thing though... Guitars are a very personal item so, if you want to surprise him, be sure that the place you buy it from has a good return policy. The alternative is to take him shopping to pick one out for himself. Bluemoon
That's a tough one. There is nothing wrong with having two Les Pauls. A really good Gibson in your price range is the Gibson Traditional Les Paul. It is the same as the tried-and-true Standard but without the body being chambered to reduce the weight. A lot of people feel the chambering negatively affects the tone. If I were you, I would order the the guitar online from somewhere like Musician's Friends. They have a pretty generous return policy in case he doesn't like it (or would rather get a Fender, etc.) What color/finish is his deluxe? And if you ever decide to divorce your husband, let's us know. There will be bunch of guys lined up here to take his place. I have to beg my wife to let me buy a set of strings for $8! Flight959
(is that ok to have 2?) You can never have enough Gibson's. Personally I wouldn't buy a 335 for rock music... Les Paul every time... Flight959
Witmer
There is certainly nothing wrong with having two Les Pauls, but depending on the kind of rock he plays a 335 could be a great guitar. If you know what bands he loves or what songs he plays that are written by other bands, that might help us make suggestions. Because the choice of a guitar is very personal I agree with Rich about needing to buy from a place with a great return policy. But while online stores like Musicians Friend do have very good return policies, finding a local store (if you're in a big enough city) with an old guy who knows guitars and knows music can be an immense help in choosing a guitar he won't want to return. Toogy
My girlfriend was going to surprise me with a Les Paul for christmas, but we just decided it was much easier for me to find what I really wanted and then get that. The catch is that I can't play it until christmas!! so it is sitting under the tree right now all wrapped up and I can't touch it!
MikeRom
+1 what RichCI said. Just don't be offeneded if he wants to return or exchange it.
Kolera
Buy him a used pos worn out 20$ acoustic and watch the dissapointment on his face when he unwraps it. Put a gift certificate for a new Gibson on the sh!tty acoustic so he'll find it when he checks out the guitar. Emotional rollercoaster. That way he'll also be able to pick out his own guitar.
