jedzep
I've been bad-mouthing ladderbraced Gibsons here from day 1, with apologies to LG0 and LG1 owners, but it's still well worth it to take that 7 hundred and hold out for a B25. It's the most affordable Xbraced Gib out there for the moolah. Peek under the top just below the soundhole and look for the V shape brace pieces, then try out for tone, keeping in mind played out strings and/or poor setup can still make it sound dismal. http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson6.html#l0 On the other hand, there are players who can make a Roy Rogers toy guitar sound great. Damn every one of 'em! You know who you are.
ChrisA83
Don't buy it if you don't like it Ladder braced guitars sound wonderful for blues. You won't get a warm tone out of them.

Save your money for a better "1st Gibson" ... unless it's 1965 and you are a student guitarist. For twice the $ or a little less you can luck upon a used J45 or such and have a a fine lifelong instrument.
zombywoof
You played it, did not like it but are considering it because it is cheap? The perfect recipe for an unhappy relationship. While some of my favorite guitars have ladder bracing, I have never been able to make peace with mahogany top guitars precisely because they are so warm sounding. About the best I have run across was a Hoboken-made Guild but the 1 5/8" nut made it a no starter. In general though I find that mahogiany top guitars lack the snap of a spruce top guitar. To my ears they just sound - well too polite. Hey, but that is me. I will never tell anybody what guitar to buy. What you might do is go spend time with other Gibsons to see what kind of sound you can pull out of them. Hell, you should go out and play as many acoustics of all makes as you can. I can almost guarantee one will rise to the top and make your decision pretty easy. The thing though is to enjoy the hunt and have fun.
jedzep
As corny as it is, I guess this little song is relevent to the topic on the floor. I'm sure the 'piece of junk' it's being recorded on is, in reality, not, despite the folksy description. Ladder braced? Who knows.
BluesKing777
I was lucky enough to get hold of a very early 1958 Gibson LG0 with Braz Bridge and Fingerboard, also a darker stain that they did a few with while they were still keen on making them, I suppose. The later ones got the beautiful 'Bridge La Plastique" It is a stablemate for my LG1....I keep the LG0 is Open G tuning for playing in that tuning when inspiration strikes without having to re-tune a guitar....spoil myself a bit, eh? I recorded this track with the LG0 a while back, ignore if you have already listened (Eric Clapton's "Faith"): https://soundcloud.c...king777/faith1a Here are some iPhone pics - guitar is leaning right next to where I am working....dangerous.... nodehopper
I think you have answered your own question....you didn't like how it sounded so why buy it? Unless you are certain it has dead strings or a bad set up and some simple TLC will make it sing....or if someone here can truthfully tell you it is worth double the asking price......again....why buy it? You will never regret buying a structurally sound guitar that sings and goes straight to your heart. Any other reasons for buying a guitar and it will be buyers remorse sooner rather than later. Just my thoughts.

BluesKing777
I see there is a dark stained LG-0 for sale at Aardvark Guitars with a Baggs M1 pickup already connected. The shop says is is a 1960, but the article I read (don't know where now), says Gibson used a darker stain only on the first ones. I won't even mention how much i paid for mine plus delivery way out here in the undergrowth, put if the guitar above is anywhere as nice as mine, well $850 is a great deal for a ladder braced hog! Like I said before, I like to keep mine in G Tuning for slide. http://www.aardvarkguitars.com/inventory/acoustic-guitars/gibson-lg-0-1960-850/ BluesKing777. BluesKing777
Me again! I have played my 1958 LG0 for a couple of practice sessions since I wrote the previous thread, and it has come alive in the heat - very, very hot here and more heat records fall every day - but something happens to the mahogany top when it is hot, though I do have air con but it is still hot at 10 or 12 degrees down or whatever an air con does! I had the LG0 professionally set up and a Fishman U/S pickup put in when I got the guitar a couple of years ago, and it is a fantastic guitar for the intended purpose - G Tuning Bottleneck Fingerpicking! I don't really have the words to describe the sound but it is raw and fundamental, not many overtones to overcook the slide notes. I know some of these are looked on as rubbish guitars, and some probably are, but a good early build LG0 (before the plastic stuff) like mine is a quality little slide guitar! If I didn't already have one, I would be buying the one in the link above. (Absolutley no affiliation) BluesKing777.
jdd707
Well, got out my LGO today and tuned it to open D .... it really had a nice open ring. Notice replaced bridge and tuners. Makes it a great player. Great guitar for Gibson Geeks. I love BKs dark top but the light top shouts HOG. Still my statement to the OP that it is not a great "first Gibson" still stands. The seem to have disappeared by 1962 though.
