Unless the decides to part with his Flying V, then I may take that instead as long as he is willing to pay the same amount of cash along with the V as he agreed to for the Explorer. Talk about a tough decision... the 3 guitars I had have on my bucket list - SG, Explorer and Flying V - This guy had all 3. While the SG is my all time fave, I'm leaning towards the Explorer and the V because they are really not common around here, while I can find SG's coming up for sale every other week and I'd rather have either cherry or white for my SG - his is black.

Not sure exactly what year the Explorer is but appears to be a '76 Reissue in Natural finish so no newer than 2007. Has a TP-6 tailpiece ... I've never seen any recent Explorers with this. Wondering if it's either a 80's or 90's Explorer. One thing, that sticker has to go - thank god he at least was smart enough to put it on the pickguard and not the wood. :)

The V looks to be a '57 Reissue, but has zebra pickups with no covers and Grover kidney shaped tuners instead of the usual kluson style. I could be wrong though - I can't tell from the pic if that's a natural finish or gold.

Something doesn't look right with that Flying V. Compare it with the picture of one from 1982

The only noticable difference from the pic is different coloured jack plate and the covers on the pup's. Those can both be changed easily should TDS want to

I don't like that V either. The Gibson sign...is that where it goes? Mine has it closer to the neck.

I seriously think that the V is fake! Looks like a re-badged Epi. The logo is off, looks like sticker. I can PM You the other wrong details too. (Don't want to give hints to counterfeiters with public comments.)

Cheers... Bence

My twopen'th... Don't trade with this guy. He might not know that V is a fake but give yourself the benefit of the doubt. If there is any chance he is dodgy, and there is, don't do any kind of deal with him.

I totally missed that, just took another look at the pics and there is a definite few cm difference in placement

I'd actually sent the guy some questions about the V before I even posted pics here. I was actually suspect about it because I couldn't find any V's with the tuners his has and the zebra pickups looked out of place on that body. I never questioned him on it's authenticity, just wanted to know it's history to see if it was of interest.

He was very honest and up front - told me it was an Epi which he put a Gibson logo over the Epi one. The pickups were taken from a Peavey Wolfgang and the tuners are grovers he'd added to replace the stock tuners. He'd offered it to me as a way of reducing the cash amount he was paying but I'd already turned it down before I saw any of your comments. I figured even though I've seen some VERY good Epiphone guitars over the years, that I would sooner wait until I could afford to buy an actual Gibson. Besides, I know where I can get an Epi V for 1/2 what he was asking.

Don't worry guys, I won't be getting duped. Whenever I go out buying used Gibsons I run the serial numbers passed Gibson and do tons of research on how to tell the real deal from a fake. I know I can always count of people here to set someone straight if something looks off, but even before I saw your responses I was looking to find out exactly what I was looking at. If the guy hadn't been straight up about the V and then I saw the responses here, I'd definately be backing off this trade for the Explorer.

Also, figured out the mystery of the age of the Explorer - it's a 2010 Explorer he bought new at one of the Long & McQuade stores near his home (Halifax, NS area). The TP-6 tailpiece was taken from an older Les Paul he has and unfortunately for me, he's replacing it with the original stop bar tailpiece so he can keep the LP all original in case he ever sells it. Not a deal breaker, but I do like the TP-6. It gave the guitar an 80's look. I might just have to find one as an aftermarket part and put it on there.

By the way - thanks for trying to send up the warning flags for me. If he hadn't been honest with me I might have gotten suckered if I hadn't found the crucial information on my own.
