Stand Damage

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have a Les Paul whose finish has been slightly marred on the sides of the headstock due to hanging from a wall hanging stand and I now realize that the rubber from the stand has caused the issue (I had no idea that the nitrocellulose finish would do that!) and I was wondering if there's anyway to fix it? I now keep it in the case at all times when not playing it. Anyways, I've been reading about this here and on other forums, but I haven't seen anyway to fix it - which leads me to believe that I'm stuck with it. Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated!

You're pretty much stuck with it, the only way to really get rid of that would be to touch up the lacquer in those spots and re-spray that section of the neck.

I figured as much... Oh well, I'll just consider it a battle scar and not worry about it because it doesn't affect the playability of the guitar.

Thanks!

  • 3 weeks later...

age old issue with nitro and guitar stands with rubber padded holders in general.

Easy to avoid... cut up an old t-shirt, make two cotton strips about 2 or 3 inches wide, a few inches long (6" ought to do it for each arm of the hanger)

Wrap that around rubber, (all places where the finish will make contact) secure them at the edges with some narrow tie wraps, put the edge of the tie wraps to the outside of the hangers so they wont inadvertently scratch the finish. If you're really paranoid, leave a little cotton on the other side of the tie wrap and fold it over the tie wrap.

Once the rubber area on the stand or hanger is covered with the material, it will never be a problem for you again.

/Ray
