Smurfbird
I was just wondering if the Acoustic Guitar Forum was started by Taylor guitar fans or has it just evolved that way over the years due to Taylor's large marketshare? I'm just asking since it's obvious upon reading the boards that most participants are Taylor owners with Martin a nearby second. Gibsons do seem to get picked on and other brands are also mentioned sparingly. I was just curious if this was a demographic thing or something everyone knows despite the site being called Acoustic Guitar Forum? Wouldn't it prove easier if it was called The Taylor-Martin guitar forum the way this forum is Gibson Acoustic and the Fender Telecaster forum is for Tele fans? EuroAussie
It was originally the Taylor Guitar Forum and they rebranded to the AGF sometime ago. However Martin is the most popular brand on that forum based on a couple surveys they conducted.
Smurfbird
OK, that makes sense. I've been catching more Taylor fans of late, but I just started reading some threads...thanks!
Guth
Yep, started as a Taylor forum but evolved into something much larger It would make sense that Martins & Taylors receive the bulk of attention as those two brands far outsell everything else. Gibson gets their fair share of criticism, but most of it deservedly so in my experience and my opinion. Folks here tend to be much more biased in favor of Gibsons which isn't surprising. No different than if you visit any of the other manufacturer sponsored forums. Oddly, I've found that some of the most knowledgable and even keeled Gibson fans hang out over in the "Guitar Critics" section of the UMGF. merseybeat1963
You mean devolved into a Taylor forum. There are less Gibson Acoustic guitar fans/players because Gibson has only been making acoustic guitars since 1989.. Before that, for some 30 odd years, a company named Gibson manufactured furniture...That furniture was inspired by instruments made by a company named Gibson back in ancient times. zombywoof
The guys over at UMGF do seem to love old Gibsons. But I also don't feel there is as much anti-Gibson feeling over at AGF as some claim. If anything there is more of a bent these days toward custom made, booteek stuff.

bobouz
I used to participate regularly on the AGF back in 2001. I don't recall anything ever mentioned about it being started by Taylor fans. There was a Taylor forum at the time that got shut down for some reason, and I believe it was theoretically then incorporated into the AGF. Back then, there were a lot of Martin people on the forum, including CFM-IV. He left after being heavily attacked by people like me for the roll-out of Micarta (as it first appeared on fretboards & bridges with 16 series models). Small shop & custom builders were discussed frequently at AGF, and otherwise there were Martin & Taylor lovers & haters, with a smattering of people who liked Gibsons. UMGF was just in it's beginnings, heavily populated by fanboys, which would be expected, but UMGF improved tremendously over the years. I stopped following the AGF a very long time ago. Motherofpearl
Well I highly recommend them both. But if anything be said I own a Kopp and I'm working with Kevin on a trailboss right now. The neck on the kopps is close to a early 50s gibson but with a 1-3/4 nut.
