Kind of got me a strat... kind of.

Hey friends... how's the weekend going?

As I posted a couple of days ago, I am closing the studio down, and so I am going to sell some stuff... (lots of actually).

For more than a year now, I have seen a case (gator I think) in the storage room of the studio... I never cared to look inside, actually never noticed it, it was there, I knew it was there, but it never hit me that it wasnt mine and everytime I saw it there Ijust passed by it and didnt give it a second thought. (dont know if the above sentence makes any sense!)

Now, I am taking stuff out and in and labeling things so I can make a new inventory and select what will stay and what will go. I take that case and find out it as something inside (wheights more than an empty case).

...I open it and find a black american strat... looks like it has been to hell and back, and then to my inlaws house... and back to hell again.

It has what I think are vintage noiseless pickups from fender, clearly they are aftermarket. It is as dirty as things can get, the strings are black (no, they are not those plastic tape black strings, they are black frum rust). I plugged her to an amp and found out the pickups and everything works ok. Needs a complete setup and cleanup!

I don't think I can find out whose guitar that is... there's been lots of bands recording in the studio the last 2 years (estimated time its been there) and I dont think calling everyone and asking if they are missing an american strat is a very wise thing to do (here most bands see squier as the best thing you can aspire to... ).

So what do I do? Do I sell it? I wouldnt keep it, I really dont like used stuff... but I feel a little unconfortable with selling something that is not mine... I know one thing tho... the original owner didnt love her at all.

Here are some pics (notice how the pickguard is damaged, the screws are all stained, and the tuners, pickups and bridge are rusted and stained, the headstock is dirty as hell to, specially the part where it meets the neck/fretboard):

Can you say project guitar?

Get some cheap parts (switches, caps and pots) and download some wiring diagrams and play with the pick-up config etc. Don't sell it. You can learn a lot from testing out different pick-up combos, changing tone caps etc.

Keep it. If you have a studio, it's always nice to have things represented, even if they look like that... You may get bored someday and want one...

Keep it. There's nothing like a good Strat when you need one. (or terrible... or any for that matter!) The great thing about Fender's is that they're player's guitars... you can beat them to hell and they often look better. (rather unlike Gibsons...) And as alien pointed out, it would make a great project guitar.

And they NEVER go out of tune... well, if you use the whammy bar they do... but I swear my Strat stays in tune throughout an entire three hour rehearsal with no problems. My LP stays in tune really well too, but not like my Strat.

I would clean it up and donate it to the Jocko wants a Strat so Thundergod will hopefully send it to him.org Nice find I would seriously clean it up and use that very sweet 2' date='3,and 4th positions on that guitar. IMO Nothing sounds sweeter than those positions on any guitar (ducking and running away).[/quote']

...you know... Rich just said on another thread he plays a strat... so this one goes for both you and rich:

I too think strats stay tuned very well, but as noted above, use that trem thing and you are screwed... I have seen guys using and abusing them and they swear they stay in tune but I dont believe them... after all, they are fender fans and not to be trusted hehehehe

You didn't have to torch yourself over THAT! Now' date=' maybe out of regret for cutting off all of your hair, that'd be another matter. :-k

If you keep the nut lubed, they stay in tune pretty well when using the bar. If you do dive bombs with them, nothing will keep them it tune but if all you're into is shaking some chords or notes a bit, it works well enough.

That said, the bar on mine broke about a year ago and I just never bothered to replace it.

I have the Eric Clapton Signature Strat with Gold Lace Sensor pups and yes, it stays in tune for days without an adjustment. I never use a trem which is why I like the Eric Clapton models, they come with the trem blocked. Just remove the piece of wood if you want to use it, but I have a trem bar in the case that has never been used.

For me, I love the Strat clean tone and pickup positions 1,2 & 4 best.....

With all that said.... someday I will have a Les Paul too. It is the design that has always spoken to me saying... "This is what a real electric guitar should look like." But since I am really just an acoustic guy who wants to mess with an electric sometimes, my EC Strat works way better than I need it too for my electric playing abilities.

Nice find there TG! I would keep it... hell it's already looking a bit relic'd... it can only be worth more at that point. Go get yourself a cig and let it burn the headstock by the low E string and your all ready to rock! :-k

...I just noticed the thread title says "kind of got me a strat... kind of" what I meant was either "got me a strat... kind of" or "kind of goot me a strat". Sorry if I made anyone think I "kind of-kind of" got me a strat... :)
