Hairy Dave Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi guys, been a while since I've posted! What better way to come back than with a shopping dilemma?! We're down to three guitars SJ TV, J45 Standard, AJ. The guitar will be bought online - no option to try and buy instore. Out of interest how would you rank them in order of preference? He already has a Martin HD28 and I'm suggestin he goes for something different than rosewood. My preference: SJ TV J45 Standard AJ what are your thoughts? Thanks guys, Dave
PickitPaul Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 J45 Standard, if he wants something on opposite end of the Martin HD28. He already has forward shifted bracing, so i think the J45 standard is the only one out of these that is not, but its still scalloped bracing. Anyhow, that is what i would get, that or try the new J35, its less $, but it too has the forward shifted AJ bracing.
chasAK Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 All three are nice. He already has rosewood. I would go hog, probably the SJ TV with the advanced top bracing. If money is an issue go with the j45 Standard, agan all three are nice. Whatever he gets like it and work with it. chasAK
Danner Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I'd rank thm: TVSJ J-45 AJ I put the SJ on top due to ornamentation. Tha AJ is Long scale, and to me, that would come far below the other two. Just my opinion.
Lefty Guy Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 SJ TV, no contest. He already has a rosewood guitar, so for me its down to the 2 hogs & whilst J-45s are fine beasts, the TVs are truly wonderful (plus you get the SJ's added bling).
flatbaroque Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Dave did you have a haircut and have to wait for it to grow back before posting? I'm a J-45 fan...but I only seem to hear good things about TV's here...so coin toss a bit for me
Rambler Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 As always, depends on what su amigo intends to play on it. If he's a grasser, the AJ is worth a look because its really a different sound from the HD: more balanced EQ, tons of heads room, easy playing neck for running up the fretboard (presuming he takes lead breaks). If he's looking to do a folkie -sing/songwriter number, then the SJ/45: ching-a-ring-ching.
fortyearspickn Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Have you considered the J45 Custom? Slope, a little bling and rosewood B&S - with ebony fingerboard and bridge.
mountainpicker Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 What Rambler advised and for the very same reasons.
Hairy Dave Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 Hi Guys, thanks for the input. I think he is going to order the SJ TV and the AJ, compare the two and keep the one he prefers. As I already own a J45 custom (that he's allowed to use anytime) and the fact his Martin is rosewood I've suggested he only orders the mahogany guitars. However, he owned an AJ before and loved it so it looks like he's gonna pass on the J45 standard. He should have them next week or so, so i'll let you know what I thought of them :) BTW... Flatbaroque, I'm as hairy as ever lol. Trying to grow a beard at the minute - my wife hates it and my brothers/sisters/parents think it's hilarious. I look more like a badger than one of the Avett Brothers though haha. Dave
