J185cat Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I have one of the Gibson supplied cases with the combo lock. Last night after I stopped playing and put the guitar away I noticed I had forgot to put the capo back in the case. So I picked up the case and tried to open the lock only to find it would not open. I played with it for awhile before deciding to wait until today to try again, it was late. So today after some effort I was finally able to get it open. The problem was that the "tongue" piece (sorry Locksmiths) had actually broken in to and was stuck in the hasp. No amount of sliding was going to move it because it wasn't attached. I think it eventually just fell out of place. Anyone else have any such problems with those? It looks like replacing it would require pulling the lining away and could be a little destructive so it may just stay this way. By the way, the guitar in the case is a Luthier's Choice Br Rosewood Adi Spruce AJ. Thus the panic.

Thanks, that may be the ticket. I was concerned about pulling the lining away without damage.
zombywoof Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 OK - I gotta ask - what is the point of a locking case. If I am going to swipe a guitar I would think I would take the case along as well. Anyway, if you don't want to mess with it yourself any place that repairs luggage can take care of it.

I think it's to discourage children, drunks and people you wouldn't let play it if you were there, play it, or play with it. Yes - if someone is breaking into your house, they will just take the case and figure out how to open it later before going to the pawn shop.

Last night after I stopped playing and put the guitar away I noticed I had forgot to put the capo back in the case. So I picked up the case and tried to open the lock only to find it would not open. I know the awful feeling when the combination lock breaks - to discourage thieves, recently I put bike combo locks through 4- 5 guitars each in my closet/guitar rack - theory being thy may not want to take 5 guitars in one haul. Problems began when combo broke in an awkward position in the closet. After conferring with J45Nick, I had to go buy a pair of boltcutters......... Next to discourage thieves, I am going to put a gadget that makes snake/rattler noises when you pick the case up! (Hope I don't forget I did it?) BluesKing777.

I've never locked the case to any of my guitars...but without the combo lock, my DIF case has only 3 latches.
zombywoof Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Ahhh, keeping prying little children fingers off your guitars make good sense.
fortyearspickn Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 It's not the PBJ finger prints on the engraved pick guards or the cookie crumbs in the sounds hole. it's the big ding on the top which occurs when they try to lift it out I'd the case, and the top slams shut with one of the top latch points digging into the face. Be careful of luggage repair shop replacements. Some of them use really cheap locks. Have them show you what they plan on using before you agree.
