I still don't get it....

Can somebody explain why the new LG1 is an LG2 and the new LG2 is an LG3?

Did someone in the front office get their product folder mixed up?

That means the new LG3 will be....??? LG4?

Can't wait to demo one of these.

I think it needs a pick guard though. (IMO)

Much the same as Larrivee's looks improved when

they replaced the clear guard for the tortoise colour. (IMO).

Just saying........

Well said! I'm not clear why they would call this guitar a LG2 when historically the LG2 was sunburst and the LG3 was natural. And, when their successors became the B25 at least they were distinguished so the natural was the B25N and the sunburst simply the B25. Not clear either why the new LG2 that is a LG3 no longer has the LG2 or 3s or B25N or B25's pickguard. ???

Also not clear where/how the American Eagle name fits in...

Yeah, weird that they mess with the names. They must think all their customers are dummies and couldn't figure out that an LG3 is just a natural LG2. My old J45-western was really just a J50. I guess they realize that people just want to own a J45, so they make everything a J45.

Does anyone know a good place to get a tortoise shell tear drop, and/or 60's era LG/J45 etc. style pick guard that I could put on one of these new LG2-American Eagles?

Try these guys. They make genuine "tortoise" and firestripe celluloid pickguards in teardrop and other Gibson patterns. Great resource, as you can download full-size PDF templates for reference.

I haven't seen one of these up close yet - Does anyone know if the finish color of the top is the same as the new J-35? Both guitars say "Antique Natural" in the specs but the photos I've seen make the LG-2 look like it has more of a yellow tone. I've seen the J-35 and the finish is much too pale for my taste. I prefer a more vintage style yellow-ish color. Thanks!

If you really want to know the truth the answer is, they have no one in the marketing dept that has ever gone into a music store and purchased a Gibson guitar. They don't even have anyone that can read the history. They just don't know. That's bad enough but what's worse is they don't ask. They have a very good collection of books by Gruhn,Carter,Whitford and others but they just don't read. It's a pity as they can't be taken seriously when they do this silly stuff. They make great guitars but they have no idea what they are building.

The real questions are "does Gibson care?", and "does this stuff matter to anyone other than people like us?"

I don't know the answer to either of those questions, but I do know that at least some rational reference to the easily-knowable history of a great American guitar company, in the form of some coherent continuity of model identification and characteristics, matters to me.

The American Eagle is sort of a teaser.

Lots of good stuff, but then some head scratchers.

If Montana can build a sweet looking reissue B-25,

they certainly should be able to get a lot closer

on a real deal LG-2 or LG-3.

Come on guys, we know you can do it!!!

The more budget friendly models, LG-2AE, J-35 and the addition of a new production line/shift at the plant suggest it's a move into the same market as the lower priced Martins & Taylors. Not that I'm equating stratabond (in Martins case) to solid wood guitars, but in price terms it's not too great a jump to a J-35 or American Eagle from the Stratabond line of Martins. If so, shrewd enough move... for the history conscious among us they seem to be a bit of a head-scratcher.

But lets be honest, their company, their designs, their decisions... really not much to do with us, we either pony up at the cash point or we don't. There's no mandate that it has to be all about historical accuracy, otherwise half the reissues would never have made it to market.

These strategic plays are probably why the custom shop isn't taking orders too, I'm sure they'll be back to taking custom orders once the kinks are ironed out from the additional workload of extra shifts & lines..

You nailed it there, the reason this LG2 AE is not an LG-3 is that the custom shop will probably build a proper LG-3 reissue at some point to go along with the LG-2 and B25 reissues at a higher price point.
