Well, I've been self employed for 4 years and as the recession bites I have struggled. Erratic income, customers delaying payment as long as they can, price wars eating profit etc etc have become more than I can bare.

I have taken a new Job at an Audi dealership. It's basically a sales role in the after sales side of the machine. The pay is not great but there is real prospects as the department itself is new and experimental. They have taken me on because of my sales experience and my scientific, methocical approach to sales which is something they haven't tried with this department. The future should bring rapid expansion of the department, especially if my approach works out. This should put me in an "in at the top" position fairly quickly. If not, I can always move on.

The guaranteed monthly income makes me much more comfortable with the shrinking global economy too.

and soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much less bullsheeet...been there, chasing people for money was one of THE biggest pains going. Even if it's less money ( and if you calculate car expense, gas, lunches and all the extras it may not be that much diff) the sanity alone is worth the change! [thumbup]

It's inevitable the economy is going to effect everyone eventually. some people just happen to be in the path of the oncoming train now..

I work in an IT organization @Nokia, we were supposed to be outsourced with the rest of IT, they pulled us out at the last minute, I'm still not sure if this was a blessing or a curse... time will have to answer that one.

I think you were wise here, and it's probably better the changes we need to make are made sooner than later.. best of luck to you, everything happens for a reason man... you seem to have thought it through, rationalized this and understand the transition better than those who would just continue with one foot in front of the other..

Good luck, I hope you make the best of the change.

I have an uncle who owns several businesses and has had his ups and downs and he once told me: if you are going to be an employee be the best damned employee you can be.

I sympathize 100%. For the second (or third) time in my life I retired. I actually made more money by not working. Sounds stupid I know. However, I did not have to pay quarterly taxes on money I hadn't yet earned, and I actually got a nice refund back this year just by having 15% taken out of my SS checks...which is what they recommend. I hope this works out for you. Being self-employed can really suck at times. ESPECIALLY being a musician in hard times. Whats the first thing they cut back on??? Entertainment.

Congrats Farns, you've done well to swing that one and from the sound of it you fully intend to make your mark.

You must have got some serious qualifications and experience going for you to get that.

I can't imagine how many applicants they had.

I was self-employed here in the UK for over 12 years, finished late '97....I might just as well have been in prison when it came to getting a 'normal' job. But I did...and got made redundant...but eventually found the job I have been in for the last 12 years. I've survived 2 re-structurings so far. The monthly payslip makes it all worthwhile. Best wishes.

Thanks everyone!

I'm sure you'll do as excellent a job as you did on Musomeet. I made a career change at age 40 due to economy in the early 80s.

Thanks, Namvet. By the way, MusoMeet.com will continue. Its just going to take much longer to get it to where I can launch it properly. I am working on getting it to connect people where a band, in the right city, and of the right genre, who are looking for, say a drummer, can be alerted if a drummer who fits all the criteria and is looking for a band comes up. I'm also adding studios, teachers and music shops to go along with the venues that I already worked out. Having done one the rest are literally as simple as using "find and replace" and renaming a few files and doing the map integration. That and a few general bugs and it will be ready to go.

Best of luck to you, man. An update in a few months of how you're doing, likes and dislikes of the job and so on would be good. It is always interesting to hear how people do in different careers adn what the perks and pains are for each.

Git 'em! [thumbup]

best wishes FB !!

I also did the self employment gig (while maintaining my "regular" job as well) for several yrs in the late '90s, and finally closed up shop when I got tired of every single customer wanting "it" NOW...PERFECT...and FREE....

one would think that a gunsmith wouldn't have to chase down customers to get paid as I was holding their cherished firearms hostage, but it took nearly 6 months after closing to get them all to come in and pay me.

the very last one, wanted to try to get a discount at that time, so I told him to take it as a gift, and stick it U...H...A....

people can be the pitts !!

Hello Kidblast!

Working in a similiar field, I know what You mean.

Let's not mention companies. Ones of our customers - who's been working with us for long years to great satisfaction of both parties - decided to start a tender on the duties we were handling. We lost to an Indian company which quoted 1/3rd of the prices we did (even we quoted almost unrealistically low prices). The outcome? Now it's costs them twice as much, because the new supplier fails to deliver the work at an acceptable quality. They have to request the same tasks multiple times, ending up doing the whole job themselves...or asking us to help them out! Is it normal? Are those decision-makers are complete idiots? It's insane!

In the great rush for every penny they are running wild towards the total downfall.

Cheers... Bence

Best of luck always a hard decision to change roles but it can be the best thing that ever happened but sales can be brutal so work hard and like I said good luck. It's a good product at least my wives corporate car is a Q5 I think maybe a 7 not really sure she loves driving it and it replaced a Mercedes SUV so luxury ievel is good. I don't know if I could work for someone else again it's sure hard to watch some of the decisions companies make that you just know are gonna be a train wreck, but most people are still surprised. I Guess at least when your self employed your boss isn't a total idiot or you have bigger problems than your job [thumbup]

Good on you Farnsbarns,Audi is a very upscale brand so the financial rewards should be more lucrative than those of the regular run-of-the-mill car dealerships as you move up the ladder. That should allow you to have even more disposable income to earmark for GAS.BTW could you get a Forum member a good price on a TT Quattro Coupe?

First day today. Usual slow first day and all that but everyone seems cool. It's a good crowd in my department and so far I really like the management. The workshop guys seem to be approaching me with an open mind (traditionally there's friction between the workshop and customer contact) All good, I'm very positive!
